I've done a few Mark Knopfler style lessons in the past, but I wanted to create one that shows his very unique way of playing fingerstyle (using 3 fingers). This lesson has a repeating rhythm and every other time a 1 bar lead is introduced (playing within the A minor pentatonic scale). The Part 1 video shows you how to play the rhythm (and includes a version played with a pick for those of you that aren't comfortable with fingerstyle). Part 2 shows how to play the 3 lead parts. … [Read more...]
Mark Knopfler Rhythm and Lead Guitar Lesson – EP059
In this lesson, learn to play a Mark Knopfler inspired guitar part (both rhythm and lead). I realize that Mark Knopfler plays 3 finger style and doesn't use a pick. I'm not showing his technique in this lesson but showing how he would approach the notes (i.e. his phrasing). I might also recommend 2 albums of his that are must haves - "Sailing To Philadelphia" and "Ragpicker's Dream". Another classic is "Neck and Neck" with Chet Atkins. … [Read more...]
Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler Play Live
I came across this one on YouTube today and had to share. You'll learn real quick on this website what a huge Chet fanatic I am, although it may not seem that way because of all of the blues lessons that are on the site. I guess I've always been conflicted as a guitar player because I love both styles of music equally but they are so different. Mark Knopfler – Brothers In Arms
In preparing the Mark Knopfler guitar lesson that I just launched the other day, I was looking through a few clips on YouTube for inspiration and I came across Mark Knopfler playing "Brothers In Arms" at the Montserrat concert in London back in the mid to late 90s. I remember buying this DVD when it came out and being blown away when he plays Brothers In Arms (this sounds incredible in surround sound by the way) - so I was happy to see that some generous soul out there posted this. I've always … [Read more...]
Mark Knopfler Style Guitar Lesson – Lead Guitar – LEG026
I remember as a kid seeing the Money For Nothing video on MTV, that's the one that had the super high-tech CGI animations which were state-of-the-art at the time. The guitar riff at the beginning of that song totally blew me away and I believe was my first foray into playing proper air guitar. To this day day if I hear that intro in the car I'll turn it up as loud as it will go, I highly recommend trying that sometime if you haven't already. Money For Nothing was my introduction to Mark Knopfler … [Read more...]
