Description
In this week’s guitar lesson, you’ll learn how to play a soulful, blues lead over a gospel style chord progression. This is played in the key of G, but I’ll show you how to relate all of the notes / licks back to common chord shapes so that you can use these licks in any key. Mp3 Jam track available in 2 tempos.

That looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun to play. Thanks Brian, you’re amazing!
JoLa says
Beautiful composition, love that style of playing! I will save that piece for future practice when I hopefully get better with my guitar playing.
And oh, yeah- that guitar! The look and the sound of it is just mesmerizing to me ((( o.o )))
Thank you, Brian, for another top-notch lesson!
John V says
Greg Allman is smiling on this one. Good lesson Brian!

Note how Brian mixes things up so nicely with several cool concepts like quick, apid repetitive Spanish or classical guitar single note breaks and some other cool techniques……………this brings in interest without needing to learn or develop different new licks!! I somehow can imagine how cool this number would sound on a nice Fender Telecaster, Brian!! A Tele would truly fit the bill and add in a bit more country twang which really would make the sound and feel even more unique!! Jim C.
Brian says
Especially one of those new seafoam green Teles 🙂

Another well thought-out lesson Brian – thanks (and that guitar has a great sound!)
I normally print from Soundslice as I prefer the combined standard notation + TAB view.
However this week (EP252) the Print button is absent in Soundslice – is it possible for you to fix this please ?
Cheers
Brian says
Good catch! I forgot to tick the box. Printing is available now.

Another great lesson Brian and I am really determined to get those longer bluesy licks under my fingers. Love the B&G guitar but will have to go with Jimbostrat and pull out a Telecaster for this one. Unfortunately have a few household chores to do before I can get started. Need to work on my guitar/life balance or my woman will leave me and I will really have the blues!!!”

Brian,
Great lesson material! On the Little Sister, are those the P90 or the Kikbucker pickups? I’m curious about the hum level, regardless of which.
Brian says
Those are P90s. There is some hum through the amp, but it isn’t bad – I usually adjust the tone down to a point that it gets rid of the hum (the tone on the guitar that is)

Again a superb one Brian !
One week starts to be too short to get through each of your latest lessons. After 2 years that I have been on activemelody, I am stunned by your creativity and the constant improvement of your lessons. 2018 is already full of top level lessons.
Greetings from Paris

Brian Thanks for yet another wonderful lesson. I can see there is a whole bunch of technique to get to grips with in this and at a fair tempo. The Guitar sounds great. I can see you are enjoying playing it. I was wondering what the un amplified sound and volume is like. Could it cover for lack of an acoustic for home practice? And what strings are you using? Thanks JohnStrat
Brian says
Hey John, those are 10 gauge strings. As for playing it home without an amp – you can hear it… but it isn’t super loud. Similar to a hollow body electric without amplification I would say. It’s louder than a solid body electric though.

Thanks Brian,
Great lesson, great sound, I’ll be working on this one for a while.
Thanks

I found online dealer near me in Teaneck N.J. after visiting the site, That little sister ain’t cheap ,, i’m going to visit the store heard mostly all high end guitars. again very cool lesson going to enjoy this a lot thanks !
San Luis Rey says
Hi Brian. In the tab viewer measure 42 just before part 2 you have 12 10 on the 4th string. That’s the same notes just played different than your video. Any reason?
wrightclick says
yes i noticed that , they are the same notes just played in a more user friendly position than the tabbed version .
sunburst says
I think i hear enough jazz too ..jazzy blues riffs with those 6ts and 9th extensions D7 .. anyway, like how you pointed out the trip-a-lets … emphasizing 1/4 notes or 1/8 notes with additional halves.. triplets.. Good you bring this up every time in your instructionals.. it certainly helps me identify the timing /staff I’m following in each measure.
sunburst says
yeah man, you should consider chord tab diagrams with key chord progressions for these lessons too ,, I know you explain this in the intros but think imho your site would benefit with visual chord progression box diagrams.. I can figure out the chords but think visual chord progression diagrams would benefit beginners especially ! btw, great lessons regardless Brian
wrightclick says
just before the harmonised 6th slides there is a C note on the 10th fret 4 string that’s not in Pat4 maj pent , am i guessing its a quick switch to minor Pat3 or ok to use because C is in the G major scale or just a quick chromatic step down . sorry just trying to get my head round it lol .Great lesson as always
Dave S says
Great lesson. Also, I checked out the guitar. Cool company. Are those P90s?
Thanks for everything.
Gary D says
Can you post a video of the rhythm track
wrightclick says
I’m up for some of that
sunburst says
I laughed @ 7.00 I like keep refreshing ..lol. I hear you hammer! I;m setting into this tonight! great lesson!
bruce p says
Hey Brian. could you tell me the name of this tune? is it from greg allman? thanks as always
Helmut F says
Beautiful composition! I’d like to know more about the rythm part, how you play it exactly, which chords respectively voicings are used. Thanks from Germany.
Paul says
I just joined and I’d like to play EP252 for some friends using the jam track. However it just loops about 5 times with no definitive ending. Sounds a little weird ending on the 5 chord turn around. How can I add an ending?
Thanks,
Paul
