Description
In this guitar lesson, you’ll learn how to play a ragtime blues on the acoustic guitar (although you could also play this on electric if you wanted to). This lesson has several licks that contain open strings, which gives more of a ragtime / bluegrass feel. I’ll show you how to transpose these licks into other keys as well.

New to guitar, thank you. I play lesson over and over on slow speed, my wife hears you from down stairs and ask me if the man on the video has been drinking . I told her I slowed down the lesson so it sounds that way LOL Thank you for being so detail it helps new people.
Tremelow says
Awesome Ragtime Blues, thanks Brian. You keep cranking them out faster than I can learn them, wow. But I’m not complaining..
jimbostrat says
This is precisely what Brian and Activemelody.com is all about………..difficult sounding, cool and upbeat guitar pieces made nice and easy with expansive concepts such as developing into different keys!! You simply do not improve or get adventurous on guitar without being challenged and paying close attention to make these pieces your own……….Brian makes all this happen! Bring it on, Brian…..what a cool roll you (and we) are on!!

Another great tune, Brian I can’t see how you come up with “your stuff”, Ha!
Inside joke, I’m with Tremelow, but don’t stop cranking.

Very well done, Brian. Every week you come up with something fresh, interesting and accessible. I especially like the lessons like this and the slow electric blues that don’t need a backing track.
hansell says
Thanks! Another great posting Brian. I lean more to the acoustic material you put together. Tremelow nailed it - if only I could quit my day job!

Great job as always Brian. This is just very cool.

I love the sound slice option. Makes the songs so much faster to learn. I having a growing list of Brian’s songs that I “must learn”, I just never seem to have the time. Speaking of time, it’s soon time for another great Clapton lesson, Brian does Clapton so well.

I really enjoy these weekly lessons. Highlight of my week.

The timing on this one is driving me mad Brian! But thanks so much for making me push myself - feel so proud on the rare occasion when the licks finally fit under my fingers…
DaveB451 says
Another really good lesson - you are wearing my fingers out!

Way cool Brian. This is one sweet site! Thanks for the hard work.
FenderBlues says
Awesome lesson once again Brian! I love the acoustic lessons with no backing track needed, something that I can play on the back porch with my family. (I like the backing tracks too, they really help my timing). Thanks so much for the effort you put in these lessons each week.

Brian, Thanks again for a great lesson on chords and lead fillins! This creates a whole different experience to my guitar playing which had never really progressed past general chord strumming! Although I do find it challenging to get the chords ,lead and timing to come together I love knowing how the lead and chords are related ! Thanks again for the great lesson ,they are invaluable! Rob

Hey Brian,
Thanks for the slow walk-through. Even though you now have Soundslice the slow walk-through is not redundant. Soundslice is cool for looping certain parts of songs when learning but I prefer your slow walk-through to slowing down Soundslice. And you can’t make Soundslice full screen.

Another virtual high 5. Smack

On the sound slice section, when I choose “view full screen”, I get the error that ” this site doesn’t support full screen mode”. Is that something on my end, do you think?

Hi Brian!!
If you could translate with subtittles in spanish,I can assure you that millions of new members would follow your lessons
Thank a lot…I am progressing more and more in my playing..!!

I just signed up and now I can play the whole part of ragtime blues. Thanks Brian !
Sunjamr says
Hmmm….no amount of practice will make my fat fingers fit into the 8,10,10 triplet sequence in the 7th barre. So I just play the 1st and 2nd strings for that part, and it still sounds good.
anthomah says
Nice one, Brian: good for getting those triplets going!
DDHen says
Man, I love this ragtime piece. I could devote years to this type of playing. Thanks Brian.

I really love this lesson. I’m practicing it till I get it right, and enjoying the learning process.
By the way, Brian, I believe the word you were looking for at 18:58 in the first video was “dissonant”.
😉

I really enjoyed this one Brian, didnt no what ragtime was before but im a fan now, cant wait for the next one!
Nick_66 says
This ragtime tune reminds me of the style of Big Bill Broonzy. Great tune Brain!
Maurice S says
Great lesson .Thank you!
greg l says
Big Bill Broonzy sort of rag…. I am a fingerpicker at heart and spent years learning Blind Blake and Broonzy and Rev Gary Davis etc….. there is something about ragtime, it is great great stuff, without it the world of music would have been a whole lot poorer. Teaching to play it with a pick is a nice gateway for modern guys used to only playing with a pick… great idea for a lesson mate

these kind of lessons are my favorites

These are my favorites, as well. I know this lesson is from last year, but I saved it as a “Favorite” and am working on Part 1 now. Part 2 will be next week.
