Description
In this week’s guitar lesson, you’ll learn how to play a slow (and relatively easy) blues rhythm and lead over a trio backing track (just bass and drums). Playing in a trio forces you to be on your game as you’re covering all of the rhythm and lead parts in real time. This lesson also makes good use of dynamics, and knowing when NOT to play.

Well, another great lesson Brian.
I’ve been away for some time getting caught up on other projects. Just getting back to my guitar.
I now have so much work to do with all the great lessons I’ve missed. Also getting up to speed with all your new guitars.. LoL!!!

Love those Hendrix / Mayfield chord embellishments.

Well I know what to do on Friday nights now.. No messing around if I want to stay caught up with these beautiful musical creations each week. I still haven’t been able to fully play the tune before the next lesson comes out, but I will get there. How about some African guitar tutorials. Those lines are so happy sounding and It would be nice to know what exactly they are doing.

some juju would be great!

Agree! African guitar music is unique – I don’t know that I’ve ever heard an African guitar player that I didn’t enjoy. Great idea!!

Sounds like something Van Morrison would write.

Loving this lesson Brian, I can’t believe, in a few short weeks, i’ve gone from aimlessly meandering up and down pentatonic scales to actually playing some real blues, all thanks to your lessons – keep up the good work!

cool guitar lesson, recognized right away Curtis Mayfield cover tune “people get ready” i remember enjoying rod stewart singing this on a best rod stewart songs cd from decades ago lol
Jason L says
“people get ready” sounds quite a bit different then this lesson.

At times I hear a little Slow Dancing in a Butning Room, on one particular part that is repeated a couple times.
As usual, great lesson. I have come long ways learning guitar with Brian and have now started to learn keyboard as well. So my guitar practice is cut back substantially until I’m at the level I can play both adequately to produce some music with both incorporates. The beautiful thing is I can add in my bass and drums. (And plenty of other instruments) with my keyboard when I get to that level.
Keep up the great work. Keep with music people, it brings people of all backgrounds together and is far better than politics!

What a contrast: fingerstyle ragtime last week to slow soulful blues this time! But both very cool!

Love this stuff! Thanks!

Brian,
How long on average does it take you to get a lesson together. It seems you can pop em out at will!
Once you have the piece figured out in its entirety, I suppose it takes ya just the filming time and given that you do this like clockwork, I’d say that have become adept at doing these on the fly and at last moment when life is busy.
Brian says
Takes half an hour or so to come up with – then days to film, edit, create tab, etc
pheartscott says
Well thanks for what you do and thanks for making it affordable for most anybody.
I’m trying to learn piano as well as I remember during one of your lessons, you had mentioned you play piano enough to accompany guitar. That’s my goal as well to be able to play both to make pieces.
Appreciate ya.

Thanks for another great lesson Brian

This is my second post about this song arrangement. I’ve been working on it for a couple of days now. I’ve got to say I think Brian your a genius. How you can compose and arrange such beautiful music is incredible. Thank you!!!!!

Thanks Brian – Great Lesson! I love that you’re playing a Strat with just a hint of OD. I’m a Fender man myself. I’m playing along with a homemade Jazzmaster with 2 P90’s. This song is tailor-made for this guitar. No “upper switches” on my Jazzmaster – just a straight 3-way toggle. I’d like to see more lessons like this, Thanks again.

I felt like you could have done that lesson in 5 min instead of 18. Come on I think we all know a G 7 chord, and how many times to we have to hear about the Keith Richards licks, and I think people are smart enough to know that if they want to learn more they need to subscribe and move up a level. I could do without that advertisement. That being said I like the lesson, just hated losing 13 minutes of my life hearing the same old stuff.
John B says
All of us are at different stages of learning. Not all of the lessons are what we might like whether it be country or bluegrass or whatever. Your comments are rude. I mean really “hated losing 13 minutes of my life”. Look at all the comments and you might find that overwhelmingly everyone liked it.
Brian K says
I really disagree with Winfred…. Brian is teaching people of all levels. As he says, take things he has mentioned before as reminders.
Not everyone is at the same level. I appreciate his teaching style.
Keep up the great work Brian. You are a blessing to your students.
I have learned so much from you and appreciate the reminders….and what u do to share your knowledge for such a reasonable price.
Jason L says
If it makes you feel any better, I just lost 15 seconds of my life reading your ridiculous comment!
drlknstein says
wow!..hate to see what happens if he doesnt like the lesson.! ..I think brian is one of the hardest workin guys on the web …lessons work for me “bigly”…i don t mind the plugs/ads mostly for you tubers (free) i would guess…don t know where you could find this type of lesson and library of resources for about 7 bucks a month. I don t mind any repetition- I don t usually get everything on the first look anyway….regardless of the musical arragement presented I always find something or things in the lesson that I can recycle and use in my playing—and thats why I m here

Thanks Brian. Another insightful lesson. Thank you for being so patient and encouraging. Your comment about John Mayer seemed out of context for you. He just one of many very talented people who find fame long before maturity. Keep the lessons coming. You are the best.
Sincerely,
Jeff

Just became a member of active melody. After a 5/6 piece band of 65 plus year olds ( trying to recapture lost youth Ha!) disintegrated I needed to keep improving. I have thoroughly enjoyed lessons so far.
Re- Floods. North Queensland Australia suffered with huge areas flooded in Townsville and the outback. Over 500,000 cattle drowned. We did not cop it but have friends that did. So we do understand… ( climate Change?) Hope all well over there.
Cheers George

Brian, love this lesson! Been working on improving my rhythm playing and chords as well as lead! This fits my needs perfectly! You are always so clear on how to finger the chords and why you are doing something a certain way. Love the tab downloads, always easy to read, and print! Love being a member, glad I found your site you have helped me so much!!

Hi, Brian. This is one of my favorite lessons from you. One problem: I can’t get the PDF to print out in it’s entirety – the right half of the PDF gets cut off. Is there a problem with the PDF on your end of things and, if not, how can I fix this? Thank you.
Brian says
Different print sources will print the page differently. If you print from Google Chrome it should print correctly. Otherwise you could use Adobe Reader (free software) and print the PDF from that.

Great job Brian, may I suggest for future lesson to show us how you compose a song like this, meaning how do you program the drum machine if you use any the bass line etc..
Thanks
Renato

Great job Brian, did you use a drum machine for this song ? If yes in a future lesson you may show how program the drum machine.
Thanks

Keeping it real! I laughed when you commented about John M…great at everything there’s just some of his personality that bugs me…ba ha!
I love it!
You’ve got the best format out there. I spread the word. Many great guitarists but you set yourself apart with variety and all the tools (backing tracks that are awesome).
No one else does it as well. Without both of the backing tracks there is no application. Bravo.
And for the shaft of wit, gold.

Brian,
When I try to view (at full view) to variable speed video /on-screen tabmy iPad Pro says that the site does not support this option. Safari shows an on-screen option within the “gear but when clicked I get “this site does not support this open” . Chrome doesn’t even provide a button/option within the gear editing for full screen viewing.
Suggestions?

Marvellous piece of music, but at my level of skill, I am having difficulty with the “Keith Richards” hammer-ons using 2 fingers. Any tips?

I think this one is my favorite so far. I just lost myself in this and played it for so long. Never really played the *major* pentatonic scale before, and just love how it sounds in soloing.
