Description
In this week’s guitar lesson, you’ll learn how to use harmonized leads when you improvise and how to connect those leads to basic chord shapes so that you can easily find them. I’ll show the pattern for playing both harmonized 3rds and harmonized 6ths.

Brian, this is awesome! You are such a good teacher and you offer so many options on learning your lessons! Love the slow down feature and clear tabs!! I have learned so much from you! My family has seen such an improvement in my playing since signing up for your lessons! Wish you were teaching 30 years ago when I first started.

Agree with that. Started playing in the 1990’s, but did not start learning HOW to play until I signed up with Brian about 5 years ago.
Walter D says
Wow. Beautiful. I’ve been following you for about 2 years now (first year as a lurker), but these last six weeks or so you have been at your best – playing, composing, and teaching. Just love this stuff. We can tell you enjoy what you are doing. I’ve dabbled with the guitar my whole life on and off, but in the last year I’ve reached a level of understanding the damn thing and I can half-way play it too – my wife actually enjoys my playing. All of this thanks to you, Brian.
Bill D says
Brian, your playing always seems so effortless… smooth as velvet. I really enjoy all your lessons… which is why I joined, right?
Keith C says
Rather that shape 1, & 2 ,, I think it makes it more movable to think of it as Maj, min, min, Maj, Maj, min,Maj, and think of the scale that way.
Sounds great.
Bradley R says
This is really a great one Brian. These harmonized 6ths & 3rds sound beautiful and I’ve found myself wandering off from the lesson and just noodling around with them. And your explanations of the chord shapes & triads is a real breakthrough. I will keep coming back to this one for sure. Thank you for the great gifts you give us week in and week out!
Paul M says
Thank you Brian for opening up my eyes to playing music, you have a wonderful gift. I cannot fathom how you accomplish so much in a week-coming up with a concept, writing the piece, filming, notating…..your work ethic is outstanding,!
Many thanks
Phil B says
You’ve done it again. Another masterpiece. I learn so much from practising the material that you send us. Thank you!

Thanks Brain, all of your lessons are good. There are so many take a ways in each lesson, every little note stands out. I had bands back in 70,s played mostly country, lot’s of Waylon and other great songs back then. I quit when i got married in 78, last year got a tele, and twin reverb, found you on you tube. I took the yearly deal, and very glad i did. Help me get back to where i can pick again.
Thanks,Royce over in Texas
By the are you, related to the late Billy Sherill
George I says
Same here Royce. Been playing acoustic for 50+ years and always wanted to get an electric. I laid my hands in a nice Tele a few months ago. It is sort of like a chain saw compared to my ol’ flat-top. I was lucky to find Brian and quickly grabbed the annual subscription. The value is astounding! Best to you!
Dug says
These slow, sultry, country-ish pieces are my fave!
Michael says
Fun Brain but part 2 is a bit busy. What I’d like to see is a forth version at about 1/2 the tempo of the original. You’ve likely heard that before but it’d help us older players. Not as fast in the memory area as I once was. Still, your style of teaching makes me sound more melodic, which I enjoy very much. Wish I’d discovered you 2 years ago.

Were all growing Thanks for another great lesson. Continued Success Brian.

I am finding it very difficult to get my fingers to do the G and the F bare chords in the beginning. What can I do to improve on this?
StreakyPete says
Thanks Brian, in the past, I struggled a bit to get my head round where to use these harmonized notes.
I now have a much clearer idea of where I can fit them in to my solo playing.
One I got the timing right, I found this to be an enjoyable lesson.

Beautiful, Brian. Great little tune and great info …. connecting chords is not only informative, but fun, too! You da man!
Jason S says
Hi Brian
I’ve been working on this one.
Could you possibly elaborate on the 2 shapes you showed near the start.
You showed how to walk up the fretboard using harmonised 3rds. Shape 2 is confusing as it seems to be root and flat 3rd??
Douglas N says
242 is an aha 4 me…..I am now able to connect a few of the licks I know, …..tnx

Brilliant lesson. I’m not going to get anything done today.

This song helped me a lot. I exercised my pinkie in good ways. I understand the augmented with the one chord, which was new. I’ll keep practicing in small bites. Thanks!

Great lesson. Rich with great info.

Is it possible that in EVERY weeks email lesson that you show exactly which lesson it is eg EP242 etc. I’m old and it would be an aid to me. !! BobS
