Description
In this week’s guitar lesson, you’ll learn how to play a classic country lead. I’ll break everything down and explain where all of the notes come from so that you can start to use some of these country licks when you improvise. The MP3 jam track is available in 2 tempos as well.

Wow!! Where did U get that cool looking Strat, Brian!!?? This is Nashville but also Texas sound as well!! Definitely well worth getting this style down especially if you love playing in a successful working band!!! Jim C.
Jack I says
I think Brian is playing a Jeff Beck Strat. Notice the nut and color.
Jack I says
Also, has the Jeff Beck signature on the end of the headstock.

Way cool Brian! Thanks so much!

Love it! It’s like Pete Anderson, Bill Kirchen, and Brooks and Dunn’s “Workin’ On My Next Broken Heart” all rolled up into to one lesson.
Also, possibly the first time I’ve seen someone play twangy guitar on a surf green Jeff Beck Strat. LOL
Gary D says
How about a MicroSession on the Rhythm track?
BRENDAN G says
Thanks Brian!
JoLa says
Brian, I’m not even into country at all, except for a little KU, but you sure make it sound so attractive and now I want to have a go at that, too!
Also, your intros are so informative, I learn a lot just from your introductions, especially when you explain the gear setup, thanks so much!

I am always amazed at how many different styles Brian can do……..and do well……..he is definitely not a “one trick pony.”

Great lesson ! I have a Nashville Deluxe Tele I’ve been wanting to play more. Perfect reason here!
BTW, this background is much preferred to the white. It gives a little depth and is easier on the eyes. After years of takiong your lessons, I’m still excited every week to seee what’s next. You never dissapoint.
Anthony H says
Great!
More twang, PLEASE!
Iman A says
Nonetheless to say, it’s perfect lesson, but i’d like to ask you if you have time consider country that sounds like EP 250 although this one is perfect as well.
Thanks. Brian

Just a lot of fun lesson….really great Brian.
wrightclick says
first impressions I love it , it’s proper country and pure pedal steel type county twang . Although there are some brilliant previous country lessons I don’t believe we have gone this twangy before . Big Thumbs up for this one am i’m a bit of a rocker lol

Nice lesson to diversify a bit. I have never really played much country style but I do enjoy it. Curious how you would instruct another guitar to accompany this in the rythym section.
Hilsanders says
The country lessons are my favorites!

In my 3 years with you this is the best lesson yet for me. It really hit the nail on many levels with many excellent tips. Thanks again Brian for your great site.

My new favorite!
Robert M says
John Fogerty plays “Cotton Fields” almost exactly like this……well worth while learning!
Michael K says
Very cool lesson Brian! Think your selling yourself short on the Country picking skills.
Any chance you could do some Cody Jinks? Especially Adobe album or a couple of albums back he has a Bluesy/Country song called Fasthand.
Thx.
FYI, because of this lesson and the way you teach for a single guitarist(can’t find jam buds anymore), I joined!
Dub M says
I love country, a lot this is my first time of joining this site,,, i want to get used to all of the stuff about country, guitar style. Tnx Brian

Background is so much better than the white. Very nice. The lesson is pretty cool as well. Gon’na take awhile to memorize it, but worth the effort for sure. Thanks Brian.

Brian, I am a guitar beginner. One question on gear setup…I have a Fender Champion 20. You say dont use a clean sound, etc. My amp starts with tweed, then British, etc. So what setting or voice should I be on before adding a little gain? Love your teaching style and all your lessons. Mike C.
Vern W says
lovely country sound thanks Brian.
David B says
Great lesson Brian, as i’m getting on a bit and only started playing recently I found this Ideal for me as I can’t play very fast yet. So the newly refurbished (Tele) that I have is going to get a try out.
Lionel B says

I have Video Surgeon and sound surgeon. i would like to further slowdown bits of the video and create loops for me to practice.

Hey Brian…..So here’s the thing. I put the Full Screen tab viewer up on the 55″ using Airplay and it works perfectly. But would love to have it so that we could listen to the jam track and view the tablature at the same time. Is that possible? I can’t seem to figure that out. I know that I could print the tablature out and just play the jam track but would like to have the ability to do it using Airplay. Im sure this has been addressed somewhere along the line and apologize for a repeat question.
regards,
Patrick ( father of Michael )

I’ve been a member now for a bit over a month, and this is the first song that I’ve made it all the way through. I’m still a little rough around the 12th fret with my timing, but I’m hitting all the notes and having fun with it.
What a great song for my first ever country song (I grew up on rock & roll and blues so playing country has been a mystery to me). Thanks Brian for taking the mystery out of it and giving another clear lesson on how all the various parts fit together – and can fit into other styles as well.
Klickitat Jim says
Think I’ll steal this as my “go to” country jam. By the way it works well with Swinging Doors by Merle Haggard. I think he did it in G, but thats what knowing music theory is for lol.
THANKS!
Klickitat Jim says
Curious… you say let the open A ring as you go to the full bend at the start of the second section. When I do that on my strat the bend causes the open A to drop in pitch. I assume that’s normal considering there are just springs holding it to tension. Is your trem special? Or do you actually mute it before the bend?
Robert M says
I’m a newbie so I’m not quite sure what you mean by a little bit of overdrive on
the amp setting. Can anyone explain how I set my amp for this?
Marc C says
Best investment ive made in to my guitar playing hobby! Absolutely love the technology and the selection. The country stuff is just a blast!!!
Ray H says
Great instruction Brian!!

it is funny, I got into AM to play blues and I find myself playing less blues and more Country, I love this lesson, thanks Brian.
