Description
In this lesson, I’ll walk through the 3 phases of learning to play the guitar, but spend most of the time talking about phase 3. Phase 3 is where most of us get stuck, we learn all of the mechanics of playing and know how to play chords and even some scales, but are left with the “Now What?” question. This video talks through some techniques that you can use to answer that question and provides you with some tips on how you can continue learning and taking your guitar playing to the next level. For premium members I’ve also embedded a video from the Blues Lead Guitar Course that explains how to find the key a song is in.

Hi Brian
Thank you for making this video. Its very good and im sure it will be a great help to a lot of the active melody community.
Happy new year to all.
Robbie.
A great addition to give a context to learning rifs, melodies,; etc.. T hank you, Brian.
Brian makes a fine and honest job. What I noticed from the beginning. He’s doing something he’s really good at: teaching others to play the guitar or making guitar playing for those who already can more exciting. He does this in a very good and educational way. Happy new year my guitar-friend!
Well said Sena, he’s certainly done that for me and I’m a rank beginner. I really needed some sort of positive push! Thanks so much Brian, you’ve given me hope…
i couldent put it bettet myself
you will never finish learning
that go’s on forever so by making it fun it won’t seem like
work after all it’s a hobbie no’t a
job for most of us thank you brian your words i’m sure will inspire many to practice and have fun will doing it happy new year to you and yours.
thanks brian
happy 2014
Please, please don’t ever change the way you teach.
I’ve been a drummer and singer since age 18 and decided 3 years ago at the age of 43 to learn guitar. I have many friends who play guitar and are very supportive and helpful but they didn’t have the time to teach me all I needed to know. The Internet became my instructor and I’ve learned much from many fine online instructors. However, many are often confusing and either can’t explain how to progress beyond beginner and/or are not good enough instructors to teach guitar theory and playing onto the next levels. You sir know how to do both, you make it enjoyable and dare I say almost make it seem easy.
I came across you by accident and followed your free YouTube lessons for several weeks. After a jam with some friends they remarked on how my guitar playing had turned a corner. It was a great feeling to hear that from some very talented musicians and I attribute that to your instructing. It’s uncanny because I really feel as if I have a personal one on one instructor.
I’m now happily a premium member.
Thanks many!
Hi Brian,
I watched one of your lessons on YouTube. The lesson was so valuable that the one lesson was worth the premium membership contribution. It was not a cost but a way of saying thanks for the value I received personally. I look forward to continuing to learn from you. Thanks. Karl
Very spot on approach to practicing. For someone like myself who plays by ear, this approach is a given, and the most fun. When practicing is FUN the benefits are truly abundant and come naturally. Can’t begin to count the endless times I’ve jammed with the Allman Brothers Band along side Dickey Betts, Duane Allman, or Warren Haynes in my mind while practicing.
I’m a new member and like others have started guitar again after many, many years. I also learned alone and by ear and stopped at one point because I felt like I’d hit a wall in learning. Just one of your YouTube videos changed all of that. The acoustic delta blues lesson…and bam I’m a premium member…worth every penny.
But what I am really excited about is you, and your approach to teaching and general outlook on learning and I guess just how to approach life.
we are very much simpatico….and luckily my thought processes are aligned with yours in that as soon as you describe something, and a question pops into my head re: what you’ve just said, you seem to hear that thought and elaborate along the lines of my confusion…..
Amazing….
and well, maybe just the hallmark of a great teacher…….
anyway, Thanks.
OOOPS, what I didn’t say above, was that the ” how to find the key” was just such a moment…and bam, you add THAT video…..too much….
Thanks for some inspired comments. I started playing guitar at age nine. I’m now 70, a retired oil and gas lawyer. But looking back on my life, most of my fondest memories involve having one of my Martins or my vintage Strat in my hands. Keep up the good work! Your audience is growing rapidly by word of mouth. Charley in Houston, Texas.
LOL, CD…. When I first read your post I thought it said one of my MARTINI’S and vintage Strat ….I’m thinking…Yeah! But Martin is good too…..
Wow Brian, here I just wrote you about what I am hoping to find/gain by being a member and look what I find. You made several key points that are my exact frustrations. Perfect timing in finding this video. Thank you!
dude
you are one good teacher !
Well said. New member here and have played to the radio for years. Catching up on all of these great lessons:)
Thank you!
Trying to get by as a free member. The pull is insidious. Too much value to not avail myself of the complete package.
hah – yesss.. look into my eyess.. you must become a premium member!
I agree. Great teacher! I had already committed to memory the 5 shapes of the pentatonic but I had no clue what to do with it. EP184 slow blues lesson where Brian says “don’t just look at what I’m doing but look at where I’m doing it…..shapes 1, 5, and 2”. Wow…..light bulb moment!! I just got my $69 worth!
Brian,… you’re a “God-Send”, buddy. It was a lucky day for me when I stumbled into your online / YouTube postings. After a 30 year hiatus / break from playing, & only (ever) playing acoustical guitar, I was lucky enough to pick up a vintage, Peavey T-60 electric, bought a Peavey Vypyr II amp,… & started learning scales. I was able to trade / barter / & cash my way to an upgraded 2011 Gibson Les Paul Traditional & now own a brand new 2018 Les Paul Studio. You might say, I’ve got the “bug”!!!!!
I loved your lessons to date,… am learning a lot,… & plan on going back through from basics to intermediate, & beyond. Since I’m retired, I can spend several hours a day playing, watching the videos, & playing some more.
I am still having trouble downloading the back tracks though. Is there anyone in your support crew I could talk to via phone about same?

I’ve played for sometime, mostly rhythm but only learned the chords and not understanding the whys and wherefores. Since discovering your YouTube channel and subsequently becoming a Premium member I’m starting to connect things just by watching random lessons. Is there a natural progression through the courses that can become a step by step learning experience?
Many thanks for all that you do to spread the gospel of the Guitar!
this is music gold my friend, just starting to go thru the entire catalog of videos and selecting what I would like to learn. thanks Brian!!!
Help- I think I’m missing something. Just signed on as a member, looking to move past my “late beginner” guitar level where I seem to be stuck. But I need a better plan. This site looks great, but I can’t find advice on where to start and how to proceed with the lessons.
