Brian talks regularly about light bulb moments. I think these come at different times. A lightbulb moment for some high make others roll their eyes “You only just figured that out?” BUUUUUT I just had a major one (for me) with this lesson on the CAGED system for Lower G and A shape played on the fifth fret.
If you dont play/fret the A string and just play the D, G and B strings then an A shape and a Lower G in CAGED is exactly the same, In other words you can play the chord with one finger, which is what I have been doing on electric with my band for ages.
What I dont get mathematically or guitar theory wise is how a CAGED C shape can also be a Lower G shape E at the same time, if the fifth fret is your anchor point

The last 4 bars make it for me…

How about this for a lesson theme: Give us a start like you did with this ditty, and challenge us to come up with a way to extend it to a minute or two with ideas of our own to share on the same style.
Brian says
OK, I hearby challenge you to come up with an extension to this weeks lesson 😉

How about just going to EP 140-Lonnie Johnson-Lead.
By the way this was a great little lesson that I do like to connect to your other lessons.

Hi Brian – boy, you’re working too hard…. Really appreciate how much time and creative effort goes into producing a valuable, well thought-out lesson right on schedule every week. Go and get some sleep!
Rob D says
Sweet and simple start. It gets me going with lots of related runs that pop out at me from previous lessons.
That first G run also has hints of Dave Rawlings that sends me off looking for some dissonance runs that could be added.
Thanks again!
casey b says
I thought the same thing
Ian M says
Absloutely love these licks!

Brian,
Thank you for your continued dedication to providing Active Melody members the best guitar lessons online.
This lesson is a nice back porch noodling piece.

I’m in the “love the microlessons” camp as I usually still struggle to keep up with all of the great lessons you do! Simple, bite size pieces work well for me. I do still love the bigger lessons too….I just keep working on them over the weeks, overlapping sometime 3 or 4 lessons. Cuz it just takes me longer!
Anyway–you are great at what you do. I would have never known about the late night. Thanks Brian!

Hey Brian, a day late. A week off, Just post a note. We’ll all be fine. Many of us will cry, go through withdrawal, yell at the dog. But we’ll be fine. Just take care of yourself man. Now if it were to go to 2 weeks ….

If you never posted another lesson (I’m not advocating that) I could find enough material on this site to keep me busy for a long time. Great job Brian. Love what you do.

Great Lesson Brian!!

I really like it! Country ain’t my top thing but I still respect it & it’s all music .
Actually because it’s so short & sweet it’s demanding that I extend it a bit so I’m working on that between the 5th and the 8th fret Cs etc
I also like getting onto the acoustic again & strengthening my fingers and callusses.

Hi Brian – I’m a good intermmediate player which is what attracted me to your site. You have definitely had a positive effect on my playing. Bringing music theory into the lessons puts you above the rest. I admire your fundamental creativity. You have an encyclopedia of guitar licks that you share unselfishly. Prefer your shorter lessons (ML). This one was just right.
But I’m jealous of your guitar collection. Just sayin’

Awesome lesson, sounds great and I’m learning quite a bit from this already.

Brian, Another great one.We need one of these every month or two to give you a little break and give us some catch up time.Liking bluegrass more all the time. Never thought I would say that but learning to like all kinds of music now with your teaching. Learning more now than in 40+ years trying to learn by my self. Finally getting some real lessons from a great teacher. Thanks for being a knowing teacher who knows how to teach. You are a gifted teacher. Dave

There is more substance in your 30 sec composition than any other guitar lesson I’ve experienced.
Robert G says
Hi, Brian,
Thanks for this lesson. This is the type of learning that allows a player move from basic chording and old standard embellishments up to another level entirely. Exactly what I’m looking for. This lesson, and a few of your previous “play alone” lessons have been real paydirt for me.
Thanks
Bob

Another great lesson, Brian. Thanks for putting in all of the extra time. Between your jingles, videos, and tabs, you really make these lessons enjoyable and they truly filter into other areas of playing. Thanks for getting me out of the guitar doldrums and same old same old’s! I’ve learned a ton since joining a couple of months ago.
Will G says
I always enjoy your lessons Brian but sometimes you just blow me away with your compositions.

I don’t care this is short. I love love love this lesson. So good. Just saw Billy Strings at the Ryman with Marty Stuart and man that dude just kills it and I feel like in a small way I got a couple of licks that he plays and it is FUN. Well done. Thank you.

Great lesson, Brian. You go so far to bring us music every week, and it’s been a life changer for me. Thanks again.
Even this short one is so full of gold and usefulness. Amazing.

No explanation of brevity needed. This is chock full of Brian guitar concept magic. Thanks, I am glad to be back.
