Description
In this blues guitar lesson you’ll learn how to add fill licks to the 3 blues rhythms that were taught in last week’s lesson (EP167). Here’s a link to last week’s blues rhythm guitar lesson. I’ll show you how to play the same fill licks over all 3 rhythm patterns so you get a feel for how it works. This lesson comes with the same MP3 jam track that was used last week (includes 3 different keys so you can practice playing this in other keys).

Last week was terrific! This week is a great follow-up to extend the lesson with some lead. Maybe next week you can do some turn-around variations on the same three rhythms. I’ve really enjoyed and learned a lot from this little series. Thanks Brian!

Haven’t been around much, learned last weeks lesson and went back to brush up, Something was different, it’s the next lesson…… This is my weak area in playing. Your helping me to develop my timing and phrasing in the fills. GREAT lesson Brain…

These two last lessons have opened up so much to me. I would love to just sit down and play rhythm and some fill licks on my own one day. This is one of your best lessons. Thanks again.

just excellent! we love digging in this seam…these riffs are soooo right.
baudolino says
Yes, I agree, it’s just excellent, love those riffs !
But, Brian, didn’t you miss the explanation of the 6th mesure (1 rythm) ? No matter, it’s an easy one.
Hoping you’re having a nice weekend,
greetings from France (hot !!)
baudolino says
a question Brian, where does this lik (the one I mentionned previously) come from ?
I was looking around, and it seems to me that it’s in the F# pentatonic.
It this right ?
F# is the relatif of A, is’nt it ? is that why it sounds great in a A bleus ?
Thanks,
Elie

Brian, this is so useful! Just what I was hoping for this week. Can’t get to much of this sort of lesson. I play a great deal of acoustic guitar and sing by myself and this gives me so many ideas for playing breaks that will sound good without accompaniment and for playing with friends. I’m so pleased I signed up for premium membership. You rock!

Great lesson. Enjoying these extensions. Really feel like I’m getting somewhere. Thanks Brian – Have a great labour day weekend.

Really, really great lessons! Thank you, Brian! This is a grand slam after loading the bases last week.
I thought Bryan H.’s suggestion of doing a few turnaround variations derived from these ideas would be spectacular.

The last two weeks IMHO have been my favorites so far. Learning the theory along with the root positions is exactly where I’m at on a personal playing level right now. very well put together. I appreciate your hard work. thanks so much….Bret

Hi Brian, I agree with previous posts asking for a third episode in this serie, the turn arounds. Still busy with the first two, but enjoying it as all the others.

I have been playing guitar for over 25 years, finally someone teaches how to use the Major and Minor Pentatonic scales.
I’ve been a subscriber for about 6 months and my playing has improved. Your lessons have inspired me to push my guitar playing. Before I subscribed to Active Melody I use to spend a lot of time looking for lessons on YouTube. Now I spend most of time just going to Active Melody.
(The price of the subscription is great) I know I shouldn’t say this, but you don’t charge enough for a monthly subscription

Another great lesson Brian. Two things I really like about this one. This first being how it built on the already excellent EP167. These mini series that extend on ideas we’ve learnt earlier are really satisfying to tackle and great fun. I’ve still a long way to go on the first two, but I’m up for the turnaround part 3 too!
The second thing is that I always struggle to reuse a lick I’ve learnt in one context when attempting to improvise in a different one. The lick often seems to remain ‘locked’ to the song I heard/learnt it and I can’t recall it in isolation quickly enough. Showing how the same fills can be reused across the 3 rhythms, along with the 3 keys, should give me a great tool to help tackle this.
clay says
I agree with the other commenters-extend this excellent series-with maybe even more fill licks-and turn em around. That would be excellent. That would make a nice “mini-series.”

Thanx Brian. When u went thru the whole thing, I noticed after the ‘D cal’l there was a response that u didn’t explain during the tutorial. Maybe it’s easy though.

This lesson, along with EP167 are absolutely great Brian! Really useful for seeing how to compose and play leads based on specific chord changes and progressions. They have helped both my lead playing and my understanding of the fretboard. These 2 lessons are also excellent companions to lessons EP164 and EP166.

I love this kind of lessons rhytm with fill licks,

I would first like to thanks you for the great lessons, have not had this much fun practicing in a long time, exactly the pace I was looking for, wonder if you can recommend the best way for me to transfer these mp3 jam tracks to wav files for my jamman solo xt, not much of a computer wiz and looking mostly for a secure way of doing it, must I pay for a converter or is there a free way of doing it.. thanks for your time

This lesson and ep 166 were great. I’m currently doing all the lessons in numerical order. I am hoping that by the time I catch up to the 300’s I’ll be a much better player. I joined last March and work at least an hour or more a day. Every little tip I can gain helps me become a much better player. Thanks Brian keep up the great work.
