I like to think I’ve understood the concept of CAGED from Brian’s tutorials but is it possible to suggest one lesson or a group of lessons that will help me see how to use CAGED to solo?

            Hi Anthony,
I was going to say the same thing. About 20 lessons pop up, you can use the sample button to quickly find something you like the sound of. EP 330 is a nice gospel sounding rhythm and lead incorporating CAGED. Almost all of Brian’s lessons utilize CAGED or triads related to the CAGED system.

Ep 356 was a big breakthrough lesson for me. Shows you licks in 3 zones and the connecting chords.

I also think focusing on triads is huge, instead of full chords. Frees up your fingers and lets you connect licks to the “anchor point” triads a little easier.

Another tip is you’ll start to notice G & A and C & D have a lot of overlap, so sometimes I only see 3 shapes/zones. Simplifies matters a little!

Thank you Alan L and Charjo, that’s what I was looking for, a couple of suggestions to get started.

CAGED is great for learning triads all over the neck. Once you know the triads, you can use them in your soloing.
In other words, CAGED helps you to learn the triads so you can use them all over the neck.

I seriously doubt anyone while improvising is thinking about CAGED directly, that would be way too slow. CAGED is initially a learning tool, and eventually a practising guide. Once the triads are under our fingers, we use CAGED indirectly every time we successfully land on a triad. But at that stage we’re not thinking about it, we’re being guided by our ears and musical taste.

It’s quite Zen if you think about it. The goal of CAGED is to stop thinking about CAGED 🙂
