I’m sure most of you have heard of Tommy Emmanuel, the man needs no introduction. I was finally going to get to see him live in March 2020, but COVID happened and everything got shut down. He doesn’t come to Ontario, Canada much so he only came up this way one time since then and I missed it. I heard he was coming to Massey Hall in October, so managed to get some great seats.
Got to the concert and eagerly awaiting his appearance, when it happened. He was just coming out from the back onto the stage and somehow tangled his feet coming onto the stage. He twisted and fell sideways (protecting his guitar he was carrying), but landed pretty hard on his side.
Long story short, it seems he might have busted a rib when he fell. That didn’t stop him from putting on a 2 hour show, nor did it slow him down one single bit. This is a perfect example of a true professional musician. No matter what happens, the show must go on. If you haven’t seen Tommy Emmanuel perform live, I would definitely recommend you try to see him. The man is a legend… and for good reason.

It took a long time to finally get to see him, but definitely worth the wait. Tommy live is nothing like Tommy on YouTube, so much better.

I live just outside Toronto, I can take the commuter train into TO and walk to Massey Hall. Look at those empty seats. How did I miss this?

I’m on his newsletter list and luckily got an advance notice of him coming in October. Made sure I was online before the tickets went on sale and grabbed front row, right side seats as soon as they went on sale. Massey Hall is a fantastic venue and would definitely go back to see other performers there, but I think I’ll try for more in the middle area next time. Sorry you missed seeing him this time, I was sitting beside 3 empty front row seats and they would have been perfect for you.

That’s a pro. The show must go on! Wish him a speedy recovery.
If you want to see a bit of Tommy’s playing check out the Rick Beato interview on YT. The launch into some blues improv about 1/2 hr in is mind blowing!Mike

I’ve seen him live in Melbourne probably 10-12 years ago! Jaw dropping performance and so engaging and humble. 😎🎸😎

You got to see him on his home turf, how cool is that.

The same thing happened to me in August at a festival in Vermont. Got there early, set up camp and maybe had one too many celebratory glasses of Sauvignon Blanc afterwards. Tripped over a solar panel in the dark and landed hard on upper right ribcage.
I’d cracked a few ribs before in my skiing days so knew what was up. It hurt like hell for a day or two and the pain started to diminish over time. I was volunteering at the festival and fortunately was able to function pretty good. Being an older guy I assume I got assigned a good gig. Today I can’t even feel it.
So that’s something Tommy and I have in common. My skills on guitar are not in the same universe, not in this lifetime. See you in the next one, and don’t be late… 🙂

It’s amazing how fast something like that can happen (and so easily). We were all shocked when he came crashing out onto the stage, definitely wasn’t expecting that. I just hope he’s doing OK now, he had a lot of other venues to play up my way after Massey Hall.

Just saw on Tommy’s Instagram that he had to reschedule a few shows due to this. Broken ribs.

Very sorry to hear that, hope he’s going to be OK. I guess he’s not going to forget Massey Hall anytime soon…
