So, recording can be as simple or as complicated as you want! Are you looking to use green screen effects? Do you want to include text overlays? Etc. Do you have a Windows or Mac computer? I have a Mac and the following is what I use for recording.
I used to plug my guitar into a Scarlett 2i2 interface plugged into my MacBook Pro with GarageBand and Bias FX 2 plugins from Positive Grid. I could never quite get the sound I wanted so I bought a NUX MG-300 Multi-Effects and Amp Modeler Effects Pedal. So now the only difference is my guitar gets plugged into the MG-300 which is plugged into the Scarlett 2i2.
I use QuickTime to record my video at the same time I’m recording the audio in GarageBand. I tried using iMovie to put it all together but I just couldn’t understand how to use it for green screen and stuff. So I downloaded DaVinci Resolve (the free version) and it does everything I want. It may not be the easiest but you can google a question about whatever you need and you’ll be sure to get many answers.
I use DaVinci Resolve to put the GarageBand audio together with the QuickTime movie and sync them up. Adding titles and other stuff is a breeze and I’ve even used a green screen a few times.
I hope this helps!

Also, have you looked at some of the tutorials that are pinned at the top of this forum? They were very helpful for me to get started even though I use different programs.

Hi Wayne – I’ve been recording myself playing for close to 9 years, and I’ve seen how hundreds of other musicians record themselves. Almost everyone does it like this:
The video part: Shot with a smartphone, very rarely with a GoPro or some other camera.
The audio part: Guitar > Audio Interface (most commonly Scarlett 2i2) > DAW (GarageBand, Logic Pro, ?)
Combining Audio and Video: Any video editor (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Elements, ?)That is the basic workflow, but the fine details are up to you. Where in the workflow chain do you add your effects? How do you add a backing track into your mix?
And by the way, there is no final answer. Your recording process will evolve over several years, and you will get better and better at it. It’s a learning adventure, not just some kind of drudgery we have to endure.
