Hi, was connecting the Yamaha THR 10C USB cable to the computer and noticed I was getting a high pitched hum that is not there when the USB is not connected, just wondering if other THR 10 amps do this as well.
It is most noticeable on Deluxe and Mini settings with USB connected if the master, bass, middle treble, and guitar amp nobs are nearly up full, then slowly turn the gain up and the high piched whine comes in which is not there without the USB connection, no guitar connected.

I’m not sure but from experience with bad 9 volt battery in my Ovation electric acoustic, I was getting weird hums/noises ,as for computers(never bothered usb through yet),I suspect it is similar electrical interference and hasn’t the filters to necessitate electronic interference, could be sound card /plug ins fan motors etc,, like a dimmer switch or fluorescent light fixture. just a hunch from experiencing the weak 9v battery issue.. i replaced the battery in the guitar and noises went away! Good question though, maybe someone here could enlighten us! I remember once Bryce mentioned something about filters for single coil pickup guitars.perhaps equalizer foot stomp pedal might help.. again good question!

I did get some noise, bought a longer A/B cable of 3 mtrs and it stopped happening, not sure if i was picking noise up from the pc or tv, my phone does it too when i run irig, noise reducing pedals for that solved the problem… hope its an easy cure, anythimg can affect electrical things, something as daft as a dimmer switch is enough..

Have you tried a) a different USB cable and b) a different USB port on your PC to eliminate those as possible problems?
Considering that you mention that you have your amp setting nearly all the way up and then the whine is starting when you start increasing the gain, it would seem that a feedback situation is being induced into the amp. Feedback can be sound related as we are usually familiar with but can also be an internal signal as well that causes the amp’s circuitry to be fed with an ever increasing amplitude audio signal
Is it necessary to have your amp settings that high?
If you have your amp almost to the lowest settings, if you connect the USB cable and start increasing the settings – at what point do you start noticing the whine starting?

I have had a THR10c and have it situated within a foot of a tower cased PC. It is attached by the USB and to date has never given any hint of noise or hum with regular connection. Using it with alternate USB interfaces from the guitar has brought in a manageable level of noise but this is not the Yamaha’s shortcoming but most likely a ground loop issue or so I suspect. GNL guy is likely covering the best course of action, the USB cable and port would be my thoughts and the computer power supply etc. As Billy Rightly mentions radio interference can derive from strip lights in the form of mains hum and from dimmer switches etc so proximity to those is also some thing you can eliminate if they prove to be the source. You might also try using the THR on battery power alone with the mains cable disconnected and Visa Versa that might also help throw some light on the problem source.

No sound issues here from the USB, but I do get some noise from PC to the Aux in. If I use the Aux in with a phone or tablet, zero noise, so clearly I am picking up noise from my PC. Not sure if there is a practical way to shield or filter that out, but I use the tablet most of the time with that input, so not really a pressing issue for me.

I think from using mine that it is just a small sensative amp prone for it’s size and ability to filter impedance issues like I mentioned (feedback issues filter issues)are typical for solid state basic amps.. plus every computer is different,, try another computer in another room .. but so you know puters make noise regardless.. i demonstrated the 9v issue i had and it sounds great..also don’t max out anygain vol etc.. effects are cool for a practice amp with the built in effect features. gl and let us know for real what you find out!

Hi guys thanks for the ideas to try, so I had tried swapping usb cables but no change, today I tried using the laptop instead of PC and a different power outlet still got the iterference with the USB connection, no strip lights or TV on, so took the laptop into the bedroom and thought I had it solved then it started giving interference noise again later, so it might be picking up something from the house below as the iterference noise has dropped again.
I am not aware of any ground lift switching on this amp, the noise does reduce sometimes when you touch the metal handle.
It’s behaving itself at present just consistent hiss with the volume and gain up, no interfence or whine whith the usb connected.
I haven’t got round to seeing if the extra noise from the USB connection is audible on the DAW.

I get some humming when I run my THR10C on batteries. I just chalked if off as a grounding problem since it works otherwise.
If you have any other pedal in between make sure you check that as well. And lastly like mentioned above, if you have an active pre-amp anywhere in the chain, including a guitar with a battery, make sure all cables are snapped properly in place.- "Pretty Fingers Parker"
