This is a cover of the Depeche Mode’s song, in the version made by the great Johnny Cash (I confess I fell in love for the song for his cover, whereas the original version didn’t particularly impress me back in the late ’80’s). I recorded it less or more 3 years ago.
In this cover I played two guitar parts with my Gretsch Streamliner: one playing the recurrent riff on the Em chord and the other strummed chords and the second part played in open E with power chords and a recurrent slide riff (played of course with a slide).
I never posted it because I didn’t shot a video and I felt that it lacked the piano part of the Cash’s original and also because my vocal rendition didn’t sound convincing to me, too dark and almost menacing.
Anyway, after many years I decided to post it: I’m curious to know what other people think about it, just in case that someone wants to give a listen to it!Guido

Great song Guido which I haven’t heard before! Loved the reoccurring riff here, the slide work, such a cool arrangement, almost hypnotising! I reckon your voice suits this too so I think you were ‘selling yourself short’ as they say! I’ll have to google the song myself but big ticks from me! ✅✅✅ All the best! 😎🎸😎

Thanks Garry! And glad you discovered a song you haven’t heard before. There are many versions, but the Depeche Mode’s original and the Cash’s version in particular are the best in my opinion.

Good job on your recording Guido. Excellent guitar grooves, and your vocals were dark and menacing…exactly what was needed for the mood of the song. I think your vocals were very convincing. As Garry said the song does have a hypnotic groove to it. I like it.

Nice one Guido. I haven’t heard that song in years. You did it justice with your slide and vocals.

It sounds pretty good to me Guido – it does sound dark and menacing but that is cool. I like dark and menacing sounds in music. Like Garry says : don’t sell yourself short.
Of course your video renditions are always great so I would definitely say a video version of this would be even better.

Awesome Guido my friend.
All guitars very well played.
Maybe I would have use a B3 to round it all up.
Very good vocal but a little in the back.
Man you sound like Jim Morrison.
Maybe would could do a Doors cover sometime…AndréM

I was not familiar with this song, but I like it a lot. Your treatment of it is interesting – the effects on vocals and guitar work are very compelling. You never cease to amaze and impress me, Guido.

That was excellent guitar work AND singing, Guido. This song is a long time favourite of mine, both by Depeche Mode and Johnny Cash. You do it justice. I would have liked to hear your voice a little bit louder in the mix, but it’s also great the way it is.

Thanks for your compliments! Yeah, the voice in the mix was a bit too quiet, it was jus one of my first experiments a few years ago.

Great version of this fantastic song, Guido. There are so many great versions of it out there (and now one more).
One of my favorite versions is this one of Pat MacDonald:Don’t know, if you know it.
But Johnny Cash’s version is also one of the best. And you do it full justice with your version. Guitarwise and vocalwise!Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom.
The next Meetup will take place in May/JuneThere will be a detailed announcement here in the forum a few weeks before..
I look forward to meet you.

Thanks Manfred! The version you posted is very interesting, purely standalone acoustic guitar.
