Hello! So I took a bunch of ideas I commonly play and put them over a Rhythm Changes backing track.
For those that may not know, Rhythm Changes is a common form used in jazz where the first 16 bars are over a blues basically (“I’ve got rhythm, I’ve got music…”) and then there 8 bars where it switches to a Dominant cycle of 4ths that lead to the V chord (“old man trouble…”) then another 8 bars like the beginning. It’s all based on the old Gershwin tune “I’ve Got Rhythm”.
hard core jazzers and bebop players play through each chord change, but the music I gravitate towards you can just play with a jump blues or swing feel, basically major pentatonic, for most of it. You do need to pay attention to the dominant cycle bars, and that’s where EP 248 intro’s really helped me with this form where Brian showed a great Lonnie Johnson riff in the intro of that lesson, but it perfectly outlined a D7 going to G, which is what is happening in this track that is home keyed in Bb. From there I just repeat it over the C chord then a Berry-ish move over the dominant F chord back to the tonic.
Anyway, I tried to notate that some in the video, my editing skills are not great and I lose patience with it pretty fast. Lol
Overall it was a good challenge to put this together and helped solidify a lot of the concepts I’ve been working on this year like outlining chord changes, using chromatic moves, double stops, and I even tried to throw in a quote from another song…see if you can pick it out 🙂
Happy challenge weekend!

Wow, Bill! You are becoming a jazz master right in front of our eyes here at Active Melody! I can see you jamming with Benson or whoever is a living jump blues master nowadays anyway?
Seriously man, this was awesome! Nice presentation, too – that zoom in on the lick added to the drama. And If I ever need a jazzy lick I know where to find it now 😉

Bill, nice job on this. You really have a good understanding of the forms. I did recognize that quote (takeoff) from another song starting at :53 “If I Only Had a Heart” Adriana Caselotti and Buddy Ebsen. Is that right? Cheers to you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Pap

Yeah! I think of it as “If I Only had A Brain”, but it’s the same melody reprised for the Tin Man. 🙂
Happy Holidays!

Some great licks and jazzy runs, Bill🙏😊. Love the Chuck Berry lick and that dominant7. The chromatic runs sound so jazzy. I recognized some of the quotes but can’t tell the name🤔. I like that you learn all these licks from the jazz masters.
I’ve got rhythm…..Gershwin is still a big inspiration.
Well done, Bill.
Wish you a happy Christmas time with your family.

Lovely crisp playing of a well thought out piece – great stuff as usual Bill. Your explanation was really interesting and made listening more enjoyable. I recognised the quote but couldn’t put a name to it – fortunately Pap did.

Very cool, Bill. Some great outside sounding stuff in that. I love that you know exactly the kind of music you love and are really pursuing it. Perfect jazz tone, also.

Love your style Bill, you certainly played some chunky licks in that rendition. My first two guitar teachers were both jazz players and taught me a lot, however much to their disappointment I drifted away. Listening to you, perhaps I’ve taken a wrong turning somewhere.

Great jazzy vibes that I really enjoyed, Bill. And I admire how deep you dive into the style of music you really love. And you can hear that in every note you play.

Great playing, Bill. You’ve ‘jumped’ right in to this style of music like you were born to play it. What a hopping tune you put together. Love you sneaking in “If I Only Had A Brain”. Pap’s quite the musical historian to know the song and who sang it in the movie. 😀

Hey Bill, it appears that we both love the exactly same kind of music. Alas, with one big difference: where I only started listening in and discovering the genre, you are already a master in playing jazz. Well, that motivates me to keep up – I am practicing for the big day when we two will jam together 😊👋🏽
By the way, thanks to your post, I just stumbled over Flash Mob Jazz on Apple Music – totally enjoyable (they also play a version of “Ive got Rhythm”).Bluesige Grüße

Bill,
Whoa.
Years ago I had a teacher who was a jazz player. He spent a lot of time on the Rhythm Changes but it didn’t stick with me. Never got it.
Your example here is really well put together, and enjoyable to listen to. If I put some of these riffs on my to do list I might have something in a year. So clean, nice touch with Junior Barnard, and of course a little T Bone.
My guess is there’s some Charlie Christian in there, but don’t know what. That was his era. The double stop lick sounds rockabilly, I got a little of that from one of Damian’s lessons.
Tasty!

Definitely a lot of Charlie influence. Got a Lester Young idea in there too early on (sax player with Count Basie)…I’ve been doing an online swing guitar solo workshop.
I think I picked up some of those double stops from Rockin Around The Christmas Tree, haha, but that is kinda Rockabilly 😉

Hi Bill , you have this style down a treat and it’s very refreshing to hear it .
Your explanation was interesting and informative, with this form of playing .
I like the way you subtly worked in that chuck berry lick 👌 .
I think I’ve mentioned this before….. that guitar sounds superb and has the right voice for this genre.Martin

Wow, a classy amazing jazzy rendition, Bill! You play this style like a consummate pro, all those licks and fast runs flow seamlessly and flawlessly! I’ve to confess my poor mind it’s a bit lost with theory explanations of the Rhythm Changes 🤣, but I’ll review your amazing performance trying to understand the cycle of chords! Great submission, very enjoyable to listen to!

Hi Bill, really inspiring this month! I’ve looked a little at Rhythm Changes, but I haven’t yet committed them to memory and worked at playing over them. You’re well ahead of me on the jazz journey. This was a toe-tappin’ romp, for sure!

Wow, that’s a great collection of licks! I love the way you arranged them all. I’ve never heard of Rhythm Changes before, so now I have some homework to do.

What an inspiring submission Bill! Great licks you chose and I also enjoyed the explanation of the theory behind, so cool! Thanks for sharing!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.
