Just picked up this MIM Strat. See photo. It’s a 2014 custom shop designed 60s classic player. I loved the look and it sounds good so far but wondering if anyone has any strat pickup upgrades they can recommend?
Thanks!
Greg

Hi Greg,
That’s a beauty, looks a lot like mine! A Truefire artist, Jeff McErlain, plays a strat with boutique single coil pick ups called Throwback 64’s. They sounded great, but of course, he was playing through a really nice Two Rock amp. I had a teacher who had a set of Fender Eric Johnson pick ups in his strat and they sounded very smooth. Mick of That Pedal Show tried several pick ups and settled on a Ron Ellis 50/60 set. He also liked the Fender Custom shop fat 60’s. I have those on mine and am quite happy. Happy hunting.

Thanks for the reply John. Great suggestions. I like the pedal show guy and I’m sure he has tested them all. I was leaning toward a set of custom shop pups. Maybe the 69s ? Or the ones you have. What type of music do you play mainly? Great looking Strat yourself btw! Is that a roasted maple neck?

Thanks, Greg. It’s a roasted birds eye maple neck and roasted alder body. You can hear and see it in the upcoming challenge. I like blues, R&B and melodic stuff. They all sound good with the custom shop fat 60’s. I was checking out that Ron Ellis set and I think they’re pretty hard to come by. I’ve heard nice things about the 69’s but I think the bridge can be a little thin.

JohnHi John
So after a year of playing my above stated strat and playing it side by side with a newer players series strat,
I have determined that the 69s pickups are too bright and brittle especially in the bridge positions. I like the quack and bell tones they produce but are too loud and ice picky to my ears. The newer players series strat lost some of the traditional strat tones but was much warmer and punchier. I enjoyed them more. Almost comparable to a tele sound which I have and don’t want to replicate that with new pickups. I am wondering if your fat 60s has a smoother more robust bridge while maintaining some of that spank and quack for some funk or African mbaqanga flavours. And of course, I love the blues and r&b tones too. Maybe I’m asking too much of a pickup but don’t like the high brittle bridge. It’s unplayable on these pups that I have. Also not sure if my pups are American 69s or Mexican? Some say they are American placed in this MIM.Anyway, thanks for your input and advice on your 60s fats.
Thank you
Greg

Thanks Billy! Sorry my lighting is dark in the basement! It is a pale blue called sonic blue with mint green pick guard and aged yellow knobs and pups. Is mim but feels and plays much better.

Nice one you look like you’ve got a beauty there. I have a ’63 and have put hot rod pickups in it from Eternal Guitars they are a small English outfit with a high reputation and can only say they are terrific.

Thanks John! I’ll check them out! What type of music do you play normally or what sound do they put out?
Cheers!

Nice guitar. What’s wrong with the pickups that are in it? I always loved the vintage tone of the older MIM pickups (the ones in the new Player models aren’t the same).

Hi Caleb
I gave the fretboard a good cleaning today and put on a fresh set of daddario NYXL strings and man, you’re right, there is nothing wrong with these pups. I have professional series USA tele and so when I got a good deal on this MIM Strat I thought i would eventually want to upgrade the pups but I could be wrong. I had it singing today! Seems Fender put a little more care into this series being a custom shop design.
Are you playing something similar?
Cheers

GregHello. I have a Squier Tele that I converted to an Esquire; it came with some kind of no-name alnico
bridge pickup that sounds really good. I used to have an older MIM Strat that was a great guitar. It had a flimsy switch and noisy knobs but the PUPs were nice. The new Player Strats are excellent but for some reason they toned down the PUPs and they’re quieter and lost the vintage vibe. -

I vote for keeping the pups you have. They should be quite good as is.

I have an Eric Johnson strat the pickups are really well balanced across all 5 positions and remarkably exhibit very little noise for a single coil.
They are extremely detailed and articulate with huge touch and dynamics, they are slightly higher output to ye olde vintage replica’s but respond well to the use of the tone and volume.
My friend has some texas specials in his strat I like the middle and neck pickup sounds but find the bridge is to thin for me without his tube screamer being switched in overall they are a bit noisy.
I used to have a deluxe start with the noisless pickups it sounded ok and was noisless I’d put them down as easy going workhorse pickups.
The mex strats can defiantly improve a bunch with a pickup upgrade Mick’s pickup journeyon TPS is a good watch

Congrats Greg… looks like a beauty. Enjoy. As far as pick up upgrades… depending on the music I would strongly recommend Rio Grande Tall Boys or Muy Grandes. They are clear, smooth, quack and very articulate. Much better to my ear than anything Fender makes. Also, David Allen hand wound pickups are comparable. Not cheap though.

Okay thanks John. I got it for a good price so not too worried about spending a little more for the right pups. I’ll look those up ! I love the quack fast strumming right hand for a funky vibe at times so those pickups should work?
Thanks!

That’s a beauty.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete
