Hello AM family!
EP 601 was not m favorite kind of lesson, because I did not like the little melody Brian uses to show the concept of harmonies on two strings. In fact, I skipped the lesson after only listening a view seconds.
But, as I watched the lesson again because of this challenge, I realized what a great concept Brian is teaching in EP 601.
In my opinion this is not only a great concept for lead playing, but also for rhythm.
At the time Brian was issuing the January Challenge I was practicing an arrangement by Alex Farran (Louisiana Fairytale). It always takes me a lot of time to learn a lesson, so I tried to figure out how to combine my challenge response with the tune I was practicing. Alas, my lead playing is not yet up to speed and time is up … so here is only the rhythm section playing in my Blues-basement. 😎 Featuring my Christmas present from me to myself, which arrived in mid January … 😊My AM weekend only starts now, as I was not at home, but I will start watching your performances now – and I am sure I will greatly enjoy it. Have a nice Sunday! 👋🏽

Well that’s a little different addition. Is the tuning the same as the lowest 4 strings on the guitar?
Cool submission and I love that flashy ending.

Yes, it is, John. Which makes things a little bit easier and I am learning all the notes (and their functions in different keys) on those 4 strings at the moment – this also supports my guitar playing … win win 😊👋🏽

Wow. That was really good. If that was your first time playing upright bass you nailed it! Loved the melody.

It was my first time playing over a backing track and my first recording. But I practice playing scales and the right notes without frets for about two weeks now.
I am planning to take lessons with a teacher, but my first lesson is yet to come – so far my knowledge comes form YouTube lessons … not very surprising, I think 😬Bluesige Grüße

It sounded smashing to me Juxi. I’ve never tried playing anything without frets and don’t know how you did it but you did!

What a great submission Juxi! I love that bass! It sounds distinct, but very pleasant. I can imagine how hard it is to hit the right tones on that fretless instrument. But you did great. Same with the guitar. Solid playing.

Wow Juxi! This is really impressive with the upright bass! And trying to match the challenges with our current goals is always good in order to master the learnings, you did it so well with this one, well done!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.

Oh yes that was very nice! What is the oil you are rubbing on?

It is Dunlop 02 Fretboard conditioner that I also use for my guitars – I thought, this cannot hurt 😊

Brilliant video, Juxi, plus great music. I’m looking forward to seeing the completed version. Good luck on your bass journey.

Well that “rhythm only” is absolutely beautiful. Smooth, relaxed and melodic in its own right. Well done.
I had a double bass I sold for a move about 8 years ago. It’s always in the back of my mind to get one again… 🤔

In the bluegrass circles I inhabit, your new Christmas present to yourself would make you the most popular person within a 75 kilometer radius.
In this instance, despite the unfinished work, the guitar work was masterful, the bass very deliberate if basic, the video work terrific. You correctly perceived that the choice of tracks is perfect for this two-string harmonic application. You played it with the appropriate style and, dare I say, panache.
I’m glad you have a “blues basement” in which to keep such a large instrument. I hope you also have a large vehicle because I expect you will be invited to play everywhere.

How cool, Juxi. You found a bass player. No frets seems challenging but you sound great on your first recording. Nice job working the sixths into this tune. Looking forward to hearing more.

WOW What a surprise. I’ve already heard rumors that you have something like this cooking. You’ve done all very well. Your video is not only very entertaining but also informative. And the bass with you is very good to listen to – great stuff!
Ich freue mich schon auf das Wochenende.

Wow, Juxi, you can already handle that beast pretty well. And I think you have chosen the arrangement quite well and appropriately for it. By the way, the upright bass looks pretty good on you. And I’ll take the lively ending of your tune as fitting preparation for the weekend.
Great idea to include an unboxing video!
Schade, dass du den Bass nicht mitbringen kannst.Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup will be in spring 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum a few weeks before.
I look forward to meet you.

Congrats on the new bass you seem very acquainted already and kept a steady pace throughout, no frets seems difficult but I guess a good exercise to train the ear ,
Nice melody with subtle use of those harmonies, and a classy ending to wrap things up .👌Martin

Wow Juxi, thats very cool! I like the video showing all the details. Looks like you had to mount the bridge and string it. You played it really well too. Nice job working on a song while getting the challenge done. I did the same. Your guitar laying is 1st class as usual. Cheers. Pap

Now, that must be a first on Active Melody! Definitely a first on AM challenges, a fretless upright bass, holly shmokes, Juxi! Really impressive that you were able to play it so well already! I also enjoyed your playing, great rhythm, sounded so full and interesting already. I like the upright bass sound a lot and I will be looking forward to your future fretless adventures. The unboxing video was cool, too. It seemed like knew exactly what to do with it, I wouldn’t have a clue 🙂

Hi JoLa. Thanks for this very encouraging answer. However, I did not know what to do with the bass at all. Perhaps it looks like this because of the speeding up of the video. The part where I discovered the manual and had a look at it really lasted hours 😬😏

Love it Juxi!
I’d love to get an upright bass, so cool. What make is that?
Those Alex Farran lessons are gold…not to diminish what goes on here, but for this specific old jazz stuff that Alex does, he’s tough to beat.
I love that little chord melody arrangement. I play it often and used it in an AM challenge a year ago or so. Top submission for sure!!-

Hi Bill, I totally agree – Alex is great – and his tone is just brilliant…
The double bass is a Thomann 22AS 3/4 Europe Double Bass. It is – for a double bass – rather affordable.Bluesige Grüße

Hi Juxi, wow, I had to watch twice because the first time I was so enthralled with that big guitar you bought yourself!
Looks like a lot of fun, and I love the sounds of a great acoustic bass. Really nice rhythm track. I’ll have to listen again once I grab my guitar to play along. -

Woohoo, now I really want a standup bass! I think I would have to put some little markers on the neck to show where the frets would be. My sister used to play standup bass in a bluegrass band in Tennessee, but I never got to try playing it. Have you ever played one before?

Hi Steve, no, I never played a double bass before that one. It is fun!
I bought myself some fret-stickers to mark the neck, but then I have seen some guys on YouTube who were of the opinion to rather concentrate on the correct position of your fingers and on training your ears. Thus, I did not mark the neck – it made sense to me – because if you play another double bass without markers you would otherwise be lost. So, I try to learn it “ the hard way” – I will see what my future teacher has to say to that, 😊👋🏽Bluesige Grüße
