Wow, that’s really cool! Too bad they won’t let you check it out and take it home for a couple of weeks to play with it. I notice it has 2 inputs, as did some amps in those days. But what is the “motor” switch for?
Sunjamr Steve
That’s an interesting question Steve, and I tried to find out but didn’t really get anywhere. I’d speculate that it turns on the motor to drive the tape and hence turn echoes on and off. Apparently it was common to use this and the echo plex as a pre-amp only, without any echoes. The pre amps were valve driven so gave an enriched tone like a boost. Maybe that’s how you did that?
I’ve never seen anything like it. Very cool.

The original Echoplex came out a couple of years before this Vox unit.

That’s an interesting article Kieth, I guess both the echoplex and this vox were natural developments from the tape based machines used back in the 50s, mentioned in the related article. Hadn’t realised Les Paul was a big user delay/echo way back in the 50s either.
