Eventually I’ll post something but , was wondering where to leave requests,, Like recently discovered I overlooked the concept of 6ths and thirds and from what I learned recently surfing youtube, I picked up quite a bit understanding,, now to practice along with a good country melodic beat in and key ..think the last one watched was a all major chords C G D ,, but any key will suffice,, I want to learn how to use these 6ths and 3rds as the chord melodies change and practice in every key. cheers! ..time to break,, go food shopping,, come back pick up where I left off,, very windy cold april 3rd sunday nnj

Would anyone mind posting what a level two player sounds like. I’ve learned a lot over the pasT two years, but I’m not sure if I’m even level two yet: I’m very sloppy especially with embellishments and Barr chords hurt sometimes cause my shoulder rotator cuff issue. I hope to upload a video soon when I figure it out; it didn’t work from my phone.
Thanks
Ryan, hoping to be a level two player!-

Ryan, I’m in Guitar Purgatory, trapped in that gray area between beginner and intermediate. Whenever I think I can call myself an intermediate player, I hear someone play who considers themselves an intermediate player and I realize I’m not there yet. I guess I just have fun playing and try to get better without worrying about where I am in the overall scheme of things. If you practice and enjoy yourself you can’t help but get better.

Just post what you got cos it is all about you sharing your playing that matters imho....Billy..

Hey Ryan!
I would not get wrapped up with a level number. It all relative. I have no idea what level I would be.
I think Brian does three levels of difficulty just to help student to get the basics down of the lesson at level 1 then work there way up gradually to the most elaborate version, level 3, of his lesson if they choose to. I don’t think it is to categorize students. If you head over to the Consolidated challenge posts forum there are players of all level that contribute. Check out this past December for example.
I hope that helps.

I’ve only just discovered there’s such a thing as monthly challenges and that members can upload their playing and Ive been practising the novemeber lesson with the aim of doing just that but now i realise as well as being able to master the guitar, you have to be able to master a computer and have all this fancy equipment. I have an acoustic guitar and a smart phone. That’s it. No computer, no amp, no other equipment. If anyone knows how to record yourself and play the jam track at the same time on a phone then I’ll gladly give it a go.

This is a long shot but it may be worth a try. There are a lot of apps out there that will let you record multi-tracks. I have one called J4T Multi-track recorder. I believe that you could download the mp3 of the backing track and load it into the app and then play it while you record you take on a different track. I’m pretty sure you can do that. There are a few other apps out there also. Now this would be audio only and no video. For video you would need to play the backing track from another device and then just record a video of you playing and your phone should pick up the sound of the backing track. Any old phone would be able to do that. Both of these ways wont give you the best sound but at least it’s a start for you. So good luck to you!

There’s something about that little red Record button that just puts me in a state of nervousness, intensity, like suddenly everything’s on the line and that added pressure just takes away the fun.
Over time (years) it’s got easier, less stressful, but still the pressure’s on whenever i hit Record.
I think the worst times are when I’m getting to the end of a great take and my mind goes: you’re almost at the end, don’t f*** it up!Neil Young said that in the recording studio he makes the engineer run the tape full time so he can forget that they’re recording and just play.
-
November 18, 2019 at 7:29 am #150683
Sounds just like myself. I’ve been trying to play for more years than I remember, I think I’ve managed a level that is somewhere below average. Every time I hit the red record button it all falls apart.
Anything that is good enough for Neil Young is obviously good enough for me, Neil Young is the reason I wanted to play guitar in the first place, all those years ago.

I read this “don’t be afraid of posting your playing” thing but don’t see that to many people bother to post themselves struggling through a piece. Seems most of them are posting when they got it down pat. When I first saw this don’t be afraid thing I thought it was for people to help with what your doing. Give advise as to what you might be doing wrong and help you get better. So it will be a while before I can perfect some song to play here. I did try to record myself, Using my phone but it doesn’t seem to pick up the sound my amp is producing and instead it sounds like I’m hitting strings without an amp at all. Kind of strange, I thought it would record the sound in the room.

Thank you Brian. I needed that. Lol I’m 69 years old and I have had this stage fright for a long time. When I play alone I can usually do fair job but give me an audience and I fall apart. It’s kept me from joining a band or playing out at a gig. But I still love playing.

I have a silly quetion on this and I apologize in advance if I have missed some information on this forum.
I have been working through Brian’s lessons and I have some stuff I would like to showcase. The only problem is I don’t know how to do it? I wan’t sure if I am supposed to upload a video somehow or paste in a link (..I have all my playing in youtube so I could just paste in a link from there but I am not sure if that is the right thing to do).
If I have missed some instructions on the forum on how to do this, could someone let me know where to look?
Thanks in advance and happy guitaring.
Geoff.

Hi Geoff,
Posting your playing is as simple as pasting the link to your Youtube video.
But do not post it here under this thread. Here’s how to create your own thread:Go to FORUMS and find SHOWCASE YOUR PLAYING section. Once you click on it, scroll all the way down to where is says: Create New Topic in “Showcase Your Playing”
Type in a title and in the text box you can write something and then paste your link.Paste the YouTube link away from other text, on its own line. The video preview will show once your submit your post.
Any questions you have, just select the appropriate forum section and start your own thread as described above.
Good luck 🙂

Hello again AM Folks,
Bryce said, “Don’t be afraid of sharing your playing with the Active Melody Community. It is how we all learn and grow.”I’m working on my Active Melody August submission based on the lesson Brian uploaded last week: EP425 I hope to get enough ‘polish’ on that one to upload when the time comes.
However, the one I’m posting here is my latest creation and I’m really excited about the song’s progress! There is another element I’ll add after cutting out some repetition, however, in the midst of putting my house up for sale and FINDING another, my time is very crazy! I want to share this one even though I still haven’t begun to master the art of video recording! There are several things that I plan to change in the tune but it IS pretty much complete. If I don’t share it with you now it may get buried as I begin to pack and store my household for the move to a more appropriate house. This one just isn’t working, much too small and the neighborhood offers challenges I don’t care to deal with.
Back to the music: I tried recording in the living room instead of my studio room and used no amplification, still ended up with more ‘echo’ than I thought there would be, not to mention even more sibilance and not at all the clarity of video resolution that I thought I would get with the lighting there. So my guess is that I may need to ditch the camcorder I’d purchased and go back to recording with the iPhone! I don’t want to purchase another tool!
While I don’t have any idea how soon I’ll be moving and once again unable to produce any music files to ‘share’, I would appreciate any technical suggestions. Or musical :o)Anyway, here it is – “Sometimes It’s A Hurricane”
Regards,
Marie“Laissez les bon temps rouler“

It’s so good to see that even professionals are not free from mistakes 🙂
Usually you only see the successful results and you only hear the successful takes from a studio … I have a version of Fleetwood Mac “Need Your Love So Bad” where it takes seven takes to get the intro right … It gives me courage. So I know that I’m not too stupid to play the guitar: DThanks Brian for your great exercises / lessons and tips. I’ve had a few aha moments here on the site.
Best regards from Cologne
