Happy, healthy new year wishes! Same old boogie in G, I called it “G Bounce” and a friend of mine said, “What a coincidence. I was thinking about jumping between channels during a commercial when both shows are good, I called that a ‘Gold Bounce’.” So now I’m calling this “Gold Bounce.” This is played unamplified with a pick on my 2014 Guild Savoy with D’Addario flatwound 11 to 50s.
Monday will be my first day back at work after a long holiday, so I know I won’t get the consolidated posts up by then. Maybe Tuesday, maybe Wednesday. They will get there.

Hi Blue,
Thank you for listening and breaking the ice with your kind comment!
I’m sorry for my delay! I set myself an obligation to listen to and comment on every post in the December Challenge, and I decided to do that before replying. I’ve finally done that, and I’ve heard every one of them, some several times—man, they were good, it was a pleasure taking my time, and why not enjoy it?
I play a lot and post some of it on SoundCloud, in case you or anyone else would like to hear more, here’s the page. There are 4 Featured Tracks (“Mama’s Talking,” backing track in F, “Boojie Soozie,” and this one, “Bounce”), but I couldn’t find a link to go directly to them so I added links here. I think “Boojie Soozie” in A is particularly full of things that are “my style.” If you listen I hope you enjoy.

Hey Mike, wishing you and yours a happy and healthy new-ish year! I’m sorry for my delay answering.
I had to get the frets filed this year (after 5 years). I wish I could play plugged in more often. I don’t want to anger my neighbors. When we get back to going out, I’ll hear it every 2 or 3 months when jamming with freinds.

A very enjoyable natural acoustic 12bar riff, these classic grooves are timeless and not easily beaten.
Many thanks Don for what you do throughput the year as Moderator.Richard

Thank you for your kind words, Richard! It feels like I can put everything I feel into this basic format (sometimes playing 8, 16, 32 or 15-3/4 bars too).
It’s all my pleasure consolidating the the posts (this is another month where the Challenge occurs at the same time as a busy time at work—I’ll get it all done, might be Tuesday). Wishing you and yours all the best in 2021!

Don, Love the ‘flabby’ sound from your stings. Your raw and rough playing is awesome. A lot of guys in the blues joint around Chicago play like that. Essence of blues, which seems to have become to ‘sophisticated.’ Have a great year Don. Thank you for all the work you do with ‘consolidation.’ Hide

Way to play it, Don! You’ve really refined your style. Quality old time blues, and your trusty Savoy has become an ace for belting out these tunes. That’s some super tones and great rhythms interspersed with tasty licks. Thanks for your dedication to Active Melody also.
Happy New Year,

Overall it sounded great, and fairly authentic. Are you aware of where you are adding beats? The structure is basically a twelve bar blues, and your pulse is rock steady. In the first chorus, there are two extra beats on the turnaround. In the second, there are four extra beats. The third, the beat gets displaced earlier, where you seem to jump early to the turnaround, then slide ahead and behind of expectation, and I think that you might be actually on time by the end of the chorus, after about three displacements. And in the last chorus, you add 7 beats before the coda. And somehow all of that seems to works (and its just the sort of thing that Lightnin Hopkins would do).
-
February 3, 2021 at 12:58 pm #233842
Thank you for listening and your kind and thoughtful questions, Duffy! I’m not really aware of where I’m adding beats. I have a general idea about where the turnaround fits in and I follow the phrase to its logical conclusion (where I think it sounds good). I’m usually tapping my feet, but where a note falls relative to that is still a mystery to me. I respect and admire those of you with that talent (or skill, I’ve tried, many times to count while I’m tapping, and I can do it, clumsily, if I’m not doing anything else, but if I try to play, I just freeze up—I can walk and chew gum though).
I apologize to you, even more than most people for my delayed reply. Thanks for your patience! Wishing you and yours all the best in 2021!

Hi JoLa, finally made it! Thank you for listening and your kind words! That’s my basic aim, streetcorner blues are just a few feet away from the porch. If I move somewhere people can hear my music while I’m sitting on my porch, I’ll be really happy doing that (especially if my neighbors don’t object)!

February 3, 2021 at 1:35 pm #233846
Thanks for listening, Bruce! That’s a wound G string, but the next time I change it, I have an unwound .024 to put on there.
I’ve been meaning to mention that I’ve seen Buddy Guy say something very similar, “You don’t have the blues when you’re playing the blues.” There’s somebody else who said something similar and I can’t remember now. I just tried searching and I saw a lot of interesting stuff, but I didn’t even find Buddy Guy or Duke Robillard. If I remember, I’ll send you a message.
Wishing you and yours all the best in 2021!

Thank you to all of you for the kind words of encouragement. I’ll reply to everyone individually, I really appreciate every comment and the thoughtful questions, but the first thing I’d like to do is finish up the consolidation. It’s my pleasure to do that, no big deal. It’s my way of thanking Brian for providing the excellent lessons, being there with answers, and to virtually “hang out” with everyone here.

Thanks for listening, Pap! I think flatwounds add a little plumpness to the sound, especially if I can mute them right (it’s a lot easier to mute 5 and 6 than any other pair, I bet that’s so for most people). Here’s to a happy, healthy year!
