I heard a song played by Joe Brown on a live concert on BBC radio, probably in excess of 20 years ago. He explained that pre- and immediately post WW2, it was quite usual for people to gather round a piano (especially in pubs) and sing songs together. Many of these songs were about places in America (eg Carry Me Back to Old Virginia etc) that the singers had never visited and probably never would.
A popular English duo, called Chas and Dave wrote a song about this, and this was the song that Joe Brown performed, but I never heard what it was called. I’d like to get hold of a copy of the song, so I’ve searched the Discographies of both acts to see if I can spot a title that looks like it might be the one, but so far – no luck. It’s quite possible that neither of them actually recorded it.
Some lyric phrases have stuck with me through the years, and they may help someone to identify the song. I think it starts with “I’ve never been to New Orleans ….” and later “…. I’ve never drunk whiskey Southern style …”. I recall that there was a chorus which included ” …. I’ll be rolling down the Mississippi …”. In fact any of those phrases would have made a great title!
I doubt if any of this will mean anything to most people outside the UK, and also many people in the UK. Anyway, if it rings any bells with anyone I’d grateful for any information, or advice on where to look. Regards, Mike W. -

Hi Mike , I’ve had a good look for your lost song but haven’t been successful .
I guess if Joe brown didn’t record it , it might be quite hard to identify it , I couldn’t find any thing remotely close on the Chas and Dave front either .
I went to see Joe play a few years ago and he is a terrific musician .
Meanwhile whilst searching for your lost song ( which I will continue to do ) I came across this little gem ! Enjoy

Hi Martin – thank you – it’s very good of you to look for this. Thanks for the JB clip – he’s a terrific showman as well as an amazing multi-instrumentalist. I’ve been fortunate to see him a few times, but his last concert tour was cancelled for medical reasons. The last time I saw him (about 4 years ago) he sat down throughout the performance, so I guess his health was dodgy then. I’ve never heard him play this song so I’m glad you attached it – John Hurt is another of my favourites. I’m not certain but I think the mandolin player on his left is possibly his son, Pete Brown.
Regards,Mike
