Hi all,
Got out my rock machine for this one. This is definitely a different way of playing for me but there’s nothing more satisfying than hitting those big rock chords with lots of gain. The piece is modified from a lesson at brettpappa.com. The point is to break chords up into low mid and high parts and mute to keep things clean between hits. My muting was better in some places than others, still a work in progress. Hope you enjoy.

Hot stuff, John. Great technique hitting the right strings on the upstroke and muting. I’m surprised you abandoned your faithful Strat for the, ‘rock machine’, but good choice. 😀

John
Huge grin upon hearing the first strummed chord; kind of like getting punched in the chest.
Me thinks you play rhythm just fine.
I’m not gonna say this sounds like somebody other than you (I don’t appreciate when others do that).
Down and dirty lick; love how it resolves with the G chord.
Looks like the rhythm course is doing you well.
FANTASTIC ROCK AND ROLL TONE.Great stuff,

Crisp and clean, with plenty of attitude! Loved it John. I also went a little more high gain, hard rock than I typically do (as you heard) and it was mighty good fun! Nice to hear you rocking out. 🤘

Rockin! Can be hard to play with that much gain and keep it tame, you did great. Nice one John.

Excellent! And it’s very true, I’ve been learning more and more how important string muting is for rhythm guitarists. That’s especially true in the world of reggae riddim where the goal is to have as little sustain as possible.

The first slap in the face was seeing you holding a LP instead of a Strat! Then you started playing and there was the second slap! 🤣 Everything about it made for a sweet submission.

A great hook to center your rock composition on Charjo! Very nice back and forth between your lead and motif hook throughout this improv…well done 🎶🎵💯

What a riff, what a player, what a sound! This is first class rock‘n roll, John. Listening to this I can see the audience going crazy clapping to it. Rock on!

Very VERY well played.
That must have taken a fair bit of concentration and effort to keep that going at a steady cadence.
Loved everything about it and of course I couldn’t be more on board with your LP.
Fantastic submission.

Liam, it occured to me that keeping this going must be a lot like juggling, everything could collapse at any moment. I’ve been enjoying the Les Paul lately but it really doesn’t stay in tune very well. I think I need that string tree device to alter the string angles at the nut.

Ahh that’s great John, I thoroughly enjoyed it. (I shall look up the lesson – I’d love to be able to do this). Well played.

Hi Gary,
The basic rhythm is from a course I purchased, Foundations of Rhythm – Classic Rock. I’d recommend it, I hear this kind of playing in all kinds of rock music, ie think of the Cars, T-Rex. He just put out a second rhythm course. I bet you rhythm will be the new area the YouTube teachers focus on.

I love the sound of the LP and the type of music anyway. Great playing, too, John. I couldn’t find any flaw in your muting. I rather watched in awe your steady beat and the jumps from low to high on the fretboard were perfect. 🤘😎

Oh wow, John – YES, certainly did enjoy that 👏👏👏!
I mean, what’s not to like? Great driving groove and plenty of crunch, expertly played 👍🎶😎

Super technical, it does the trick, I’ve got the riff in my head at the end, all that’s missing are some lyrics and a few expressive grimaces 🙂

Great stuff! You’ve unleashed something there. As Liam noted, a very impressive consistent right hand action, which as always, you make look easy.

Solid rock, what a classic sound. Don’t think there’s much of that around these days. I just had three days in Tokyo, only saw two guitars being carried around, one was a young guy, the other an old Western guy who was probably a professional on tour as he was catching a flight back home. Twenty years ago there were buskers and guitars on backs everywhere.

Rock on , that’s a big fat tone you’ve dialled in for this one , nice to see you on the LP .
Interesting technique with right hand , that must be very satisfying to get down and almost hypnotic to play , sounds great a masterclass for sure .Martin

I want to join your band.
(We can ruin our hearing together.)
This has all the elements of great driving rock. Clean, powerful, dirty but not too, good structure. Variations on the theme. Fabulous tone out of that Les Paul. -

Man, you rocked with your rock machine 😅! I love too sometimes, secretly and with my headphones, to play those big chords with some distortion 😃! Loved the combination of rhythm patterns with muted strings and classic blues licks, masterfully played as usual from you, John! Lovely submission.

Takes me back about 45 years ago and makes my head bob and my heart and feet stomp. So very good!
Too old for rock and roll but too young to die

Holly Heavens! 🤩 John is rocking a Les Paul like a rock star!!!
No, seriously, this was something. I appreciate the explanation of rhythm muting difficulties, and yet what you played here sounded super clean and clear. What a great catchy riff too, I can see how fun it must have been to play that (loud!).🎸JoLa

That rocked! But so so tasty and with attitude. It reminds me of songs like Get it On – T Rex with those qualities that you don’t hear anymore. Rock Star Award ⭐️ this month for you Charjo, very deserving.

Rock on, John!! What great energy and drive! This one is truly in the league of the great rock anthems and iconic hits of an era. I like that you’ve gone “power-electric” here… yes, a lot of acoustic this month, but yours stands out in contrast. Very nice!

John, that was really solid rhythm playing. You really nailed it and your consistency was there throughout. I really appreciate and admire that especially after practicing some tunes over and over….its tough to keep it all together. I’ll check out that rhythm course you mentioned above. Sounds cools. Cheers. Pap

Hey John:
What a great rock and roll technique. If I had a lighter it would be flaming now with the hope of an encore! You playing infused a great rock feel. I don’t know if this is the same technique, but that rock playing style you just did so well reminded me of the Georgia Satellites (whom I don’t know well) playing their attention getting guitar on the song “keep your hands to yourself”. Bravo. Tom
