Description
In this week’s guitar lesson, I’ll show you how to hold back and play less. This type of blues guitar comping is designed to enhance the music and complement the rhythm (as opposed to playing a solo on top of everything).

Another awesome lesson! Thanks Brian
San Luis Rey says
That is a really nice piece Brian! I have noticed many great guitar players do this often. It’s not always about a screaming solo or straight ahead rhythm but just making good music together.
Michael Allen says
Great lesson! Thanks Brian
Aussie Rick says
Beautiful composition and a great lesson thanks Brian. How to play something between rhythm and lead that complements the other instruments in the band, has been a bit of a mystery to me – so this will be a huge help. Thanks again,
Rick

Nice lesson. Going to give this a good couple of hours.

Hey Brian-the mp3 with guitar is the wrong one (it’s from the previous lesson)
Brian says
Try refreshing the page – i fixed it last night. You just have the old page cached in your browser.

Another really solid lesson! I’ve been looking for this quality and level of instruction for a long time. The lessons are challenging and well thought out and Brian does a great job of breaking it all down without wasting too much time reviewing the basics. Good stuff! 🤘🏼

Great lesson. One of my blues heroes, Ronnie Earl, mentions this approach often. “Leave some space”, he says.
Ian C says
This is a great sounding composition with some very useful licks, also a guitar playing style which I think many probably want to emulate when we listen to music but is less often addressed in lessons. Thanks Brian, some more of this please.

Brian – Been with ya as a Premium Member a couple of years now. This is your BEST one so far for many many reasons. High quality, high value instruction, man. Thanks so much. Love it when you talk about the guitar, amp, and tone to nail what you’ve done or for variations. More of that and more lessons like this one.
Canadian Lefty says
I totally agree with jaystrings “High quality, high value instruction, man. Thanks so much. Love it when you talk about the guitar, amp, and tone to nail what you’ve done or for variations. More of that and more lessons like this one”
Finally took the plunge and signed up today after years of freebies.
Thanks Brian.

I found this lesson very helpful, some tasty licks and lots of room to improvise with the jam track. Thanks Brian!

Love this lesson. Huh?monic notes now you say. Dunno. But love the lesson and it seems within my increasing (albeit slowly) skill set. Got to say, Brian, I have learned so much from your lessons. The quality of your music, and your playing is awe inspiring. Plus your patience and teaching style – just great and, as I say, since coming on board I’ve been able to see beyond pattern 1 Am pentatonic – something I wasn’t sure how to move beyond.
sunburst says
cool part getting an understanding from explaining the minor pentatonic scale ..the natural minor scale and the harmonic minor scale just half note difference between couple notes in same minor scale!
Gregory P says
I love it Brian, Keep up the good work
dodgeuniversity says
Sweet!
frankie05 says
love the sound of this lesson but yikes, its too many scales for me to try and work with.

I’m getting so much out of this lesson. I’ve spent all week playing with it and I’ve just scratched the surface of what it offers. It’s a great complement to EP219 too. Listening and thinking what you want to say are so important and the space between the licks really helps someone with a slow brain like mine!

Love the phrasing! Very Knofler-ish.
stephen b says
Key signature?
M & N says
I guess I prefer minor key stuff, amazing how you keep coming up with new material. it true you teach how to play and not memorize
Lights says
Yes, it’s a kinda a Knopfler-ish, but also influenced from Tony Joe White as well. Great lesson.
Michael C says
Wish the jam track was in the on screen tab viewer. That really helps A LOT. Can you go back and put it in there?
Michael C says
Is there a way to get the jam track to play with the on screen tab viewer like most lessons?
Drew D says
this is one excellent lesson. thanks again Sir Brian.
