I used to have some favorite licks a few years ago, but now days I don’t need to resort to them, since I mainly just make stuff up. Lately I’ve been studying Open E tuning, and of course, that means all new chord structures and licks. To jump-start my career in Open E, I’ve been studying the Allman Brothers “Little Martha” which they played in Open E. BUT it was originally played as a duet, so I worked out my version of how to play it as a solo. Basically I just listened to the original over and over again and tried to play along with it as best I could. After I had done all that, I found online some tabs worked out by the music department of an American university. It was pretty close to what I had worked out. I like mine better because it’s easier.
In addition to the AM challenge, I was also trying to research how to get a decent recording outdoors when the camera is too far away to pick up the sound. So just for fun, I included some of my experimental efforts. I recorded the main lick in several different ways, none of which were any good. So now I ordered a portable audio recorder called a Zoom H1. The downside is I’ll have to sync the audio and video in my video editor, but that’s no problem. When it arrives, I’ll post a video of how it worked out.

I’m loving how you are so creative in everything you do and I have to say I quite like the bunker version. I don’t know this tune but it sounds beautiful.

Hi Steve, it’s great that you keep pushing the boundaries and still manage to come up with great music every month. I don’t know that song but it sounds good – the Allman Brothers’ sound came through loud and clear. It’ll be interesting to see how your experiments develope.

This was great fun and a catchy tune. E tuning opens a world of possibilities, as you have shown.
I think we should have a monthly challenge where we ALL play a few licks in multiple venues, It’s very entertaining.
Of course most of us don’t have a World War I bunker to play in, but I do have a chicken coop and a beaver pond I could stand in while playing and I bet they wouldn’t stop me from playing at the town dump — especially since it’s frikkin’ freezing here right now.
Anyway, there’s another piece of new tech you might have heard of called Audigo. It let’s you record multiple tracks of sound while your iPhone serves as a camera in the distance. I guess it has a blue tooth connection to the camera. It has editing and mixing functions, too.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the comparison demo for distance recording. Nice arrangement and playing on this ABB tune. I just happen to own a MV88 and had no idea that it would work at that distance.Mike

Hi Steve, that was a very catchy tune; very well played. Thanks for the different recording scenarios 😊 very interesting and entertaining. For outdoor recording I use a ZOOM H5 – works just fine. However, I must admit to seldom bother with it – I think, of my 48 challenge responses I did 2 using the H5. I am looking forward to hearing about your experience with the H1.

Beautiful arrangement, well played. Unique submission with the open E tuning, I love it!
I’m the same way, “favorite” seems to coincide with “current.” 🙂

Steve
Really well done! Note for note. I think the Shure MV88 was your best mic. Keep me posted as I am looking for a compatible and better alternative to iPhone (even though I like what I am producing with mine) I always want something better.John

Hi Steve, first of all, great work on the tune. It sounds good and pretty true to the original, to my ear.
That lavalier mic sounded great for your voice… I wonder how it would pick up the guitar if you could mount it out in front of the strings by 6 or 8 inches, instead of clipped to your shirt. Just a thought. Please keep sharing your experiments. -

As we experience our first snowfalls here in Toronto, I am jealous to see you in shorts and t-shirt and playing guitar on the beach.
Nice work on Little Martha and I’m also interested in your ongoing research.

Hi Steve, I really like your acoustic playing of late – very, very nice – well played. Your experiments are very entertaining too and the whole thing is a good watch :-).
I used to own the Zoom H1 – little stereo recorder – I used to mount it on a tripod to record acoustic when I very first started trying to record anything. It was amazingly good & I regret selling it really. I think you’ll like it’ Incidentally mine came with detachable sponge baffles.
See you next time

First of all, I’m impressed by your “Little Martha” transcription, it amazes me that you figured it out by yourself and then still liked it more than the “official” transcript. I tried to do that with a couple of songs and it’s not easy, ugh! Secondly, another great educational video from you, you have developed quite a style – very cool, I enjoy watching your journey!
It was fun seeing your great outdoors playing and recording adventures too. I will be testing my Tascam recorder outside when it gets warmer in the Spring which should be here in March/April. I think in the end, the recording quality will always be a compromise between sound quality and the portability, it’s just a matter of finding the one that works the best for your needs.

Wow Steve, that’s really impressive that you worked that out in open E by yourself and played it so well. I struggle to play stuff that well in a year of practicing….thankfully I enjoy the journey! Since your in that neck of the planet, may I recommend Maton Acoustic…which offers a built in mic. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Pap

Like how you go to places that others would not dare Steve. Excellent version of Little Martha, so beautiful. Liked the sound from the WW1 bunker. And yes will follow with interest on your analysis and outcomes in this area.

It’s amazing how nice your Martin is ringing despite different recording ways, Steve!
Beautiful tune as well.

Love the bunker-verb!
Saw Jimmy Buffett in concert after Duane Allman had passed and he turned the stage over to his sidemen, Mac MacAnally who played his version of Little Martha. He told the story of learning it when he was young by listening to the record and. It realizing it’s a duet…ha. Check out his version sometime if you want.
Nice playing Steve! Looks like a nice summer shaping up down South 🙂 -

Your submissions are always so inspiring Steve! Thank you! Looking forward for the next results of your quest, anyway the locations were beautiful!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.

That was some mighty fine finger picking on Little Martha. You look to have a good grasp on open E already.
The beach reminded me of our summers in Australia, some of the winters too 😃!
I think the bunker version would sound a whole lot better with a high pass filter or even just a bit of eq to cut the boom frequency. look forward to how the Zoom works out too. -

This is so interesting in different ways, Steve
First of all, great, how you worked out that arrangement of “Little Martha”. You created a very fine version of this great song.
Second, your playing on the acoustic gives it your personal stamp.
And third, interesting recording experiments in those different places ( I like the bunker idea). My best wishes for finding the perfect solutionTake the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup will be in spring 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum a few weeks before.
I look forward to meet you.

Parlor size acoustics are my favorite, you made some really nice melodic lines come out of it.
Live on planet Earth ? You got the blues.

A very nice cover of Little Martha, Steve. It’s cool that you’re picking up Open E. You probably know that most of what Derek Trucks plays is in Open E, so lots to work with there too. – Bret

Masterclass, Steve! You are the Greatest!! (Original version awesome as is, recorded the regular way.)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
LarryP.S. That sure mike on the beach sounded fantastic also. I loved the wind effect. Had those two people walking down the beach in the far background looking great. Could have played on and finished this to good effect, I think.

Loved your “Little Marha” arrangement in open E for standalone guitar, so enjoyable to listen to and so very well played! Really you inspired me to try to learn this song!
About the recording experiments, well I loved the “on the beach” because I love the landscape and I’m a bit envious 😂!
Joking asides, it was the best and with a wind shield it would have been perfect.
I own since several year a H2n (older model than H1, but still in production) and it’s a very good portable recorder!Guido
