Good day to you all,
The Challenge was to come play some of our favourite licks – a minimum of three.
The biggest problem was keeping the number down so that the video wasn’t a ridiculous length. After some serious pruning I kept it at 5 minutes, but only after taking out licks from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Byrds, Carl Perkins etc.
I was surprised by the preponderance of intros that I’d included. I hope you like what I’ve left in, and I’m really looking forward to watching everyone’s postings – I’m sure it will be hugely varied.
Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, here’s the linkRegards,
Mike

Thanks, Mike. I love those riff based licks, like the the Ray Charles one, to cover the changes and that’s a nice little turnaround to end your video.

Thanks John, I’m glad you liked it. It was a fun thing to do and could easily be a default challenge if Brian was too busy one month.

What a wonderful video, I really liked Ray Charles and the last one you made up was great, I loved it! I never thought of doing a ring tone for the phone, yours sounds really cool!

Thanks Jenny, I’m pleased you like it. I think Ray Charles was a genius musician – that intro was the same lick played in the key of the 1; 4 and 5 chords – so simple but so effective.

Those early songs nailed down some of the best riffs, they sound timeless. Great pick of riffs and licks Mike. Particularly liked that last one which I’ve not heard before but I will henceforth refer to as Mike’s when I shamelessly use it.

Thanks Mike,
Great to hear an old school rocker from “The old smoke.” Lessons we’re learned in your timing alone. The years have served you well. Brilliant, as my English friends would say.

It doesn’t matter if someone wrote/played your lick before you did as long as it hasn’t become famous like What I Say. You can still claim it
It was nice to get a little rock history review as a bonus. It felt like I was transported back in time.

Thanks for your comments Paul. For better or worse I’m pretty much still back in that time, musically speaking.

Great variety of riffs and licks that you present here, Mike. And also a little deep dive into rock history. I love these riff-oriented licks, where you recognize the songs after just a few notes.

Thanks Michael, I’m glad you liked it. I recorded the lick onto my phone several years ago. I’m slightly embarrassed to remember that it took me twelve takes to get it right.

Intro and Outros Mike!!! Really define a song – very well done my friend! That’s the best part about licks and phrases Mike: Make them your own at any pace!

Nice one, Mike. You really reminded me of how cool some of those early licks were. The guys who made them up were true music pioneers. Respect to them all.

Thanks Steve, I’m glad you liked it. We take these musical influences for granted sometimes: it’s quite astonishing to consider the wealth of great music from 50 or 60 years ago. And in our challenge this month there’s no Scotty Moore, Chet Atkins, Carl Perkins, Steve Cropper, Duane Eddy etc. Please excuse the rant.

Old school licks just stand the test of time. The 5 mins went by very quickly as I was ready for what was next. Really nice presentation and the opening lick was a knock out.

Nicely done, Mike! Very well presented, excellent demonstration, well played and just the right tone for each one!
Haha, it made me chuckle when you said you couldn’t just stick to 3 licks, I had the same problem 😉I like your (maybe) lick and your telephone ring tone very much!

Enjoyed that musical tour very much. That Ray Charles one has a great swing as you’d expect from that cat.
Be kind to yourself (especially when you're trying to play this instrument!)

Hi Mike , nice medley of classic licks , they have really stood the test of time ,
Your ending lick sounds great , as does your telecaster you’ve dialled in the right tone to showcase these licks , the phone ring tone is a cool idea.
As a side note I replied to your quest to find the lost song and it’s proving to be quite elusive, I can see why you asked for help! I’ll keep looking ( I like a challenge!)Martin

December 8, 2024 at 11:15 am #383481
Many thanks Martin, I’m glad you liked the licks. There’s never any confusion about who’s got a call coming in with that lick on the phone.
Thanks for your response/help to identify that song – I’ve just replied. As you say – that’s quite a challenge.

Mike, nice job distilling your favorite lics. You have great taste in music and grew up at a great era of music. I love that clasic rock. I broke out my electric when you played the Ray Charles lic….I havent heard that in so long. Also, I like your style…you could teach music. Nice submission. Cheers to you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Pap

December 8, 2024 at 11:29 am #383489
Pap, thank you so much for your kind comments. I consider myself lucky to have been taking an interest in music from about the mid 1950s – it established my preferences then, but to a certain extent it means that I live in the past and don’t have much interest in stuff after the mid 1970s. Quite often this is to my detriment because now and then there is something that comes up that is very good. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Great assortment of licks, Mike. I think think that last lick (all your own) was my favorite. Very melodic and and I love how it ascends and descends. Close seconds and thirds were Ray Charles and Snake Bite Boogie licks. Very enjoyable and loved the history you threw in!
Larry
P.S. Favorite line, “He plays it incredibly fast, I don’t.” LOL–great delivery.-
