Hello AM Guitarists!
I like challenges that prompt us to create something. It reminds me of an inspiring (and aspirational!) quote from Miles Davis: “I’m always thinking about creating. My future starts when I wake up every morning. Every day I find something creative to do with my life.”I began with 15 sec of a Ryan Adams “D to C chord riff” that sounds nice, and hoped would trigger a riff idea. And it did inspire the very simple thought to “flip it” to work on Cmaj7 to D chord progression riffs. The original riff happens between the 16 to 28 second mark. After that, everything is just connected variations on the Cmaj7 to D riff, e.g., the next variation uses a Cmaj7 to C9_+11 to D from the 29 to 41 sec, and so on.
The approach is to record and capture a theme and a range of related riff ideas. In this way, the recording can be used as input to build a song in a subsequent step (and played however you like, e.g., fingerstyle or as a lead over a backing track). And it’s nice to just capture riff ideas without refining the playing and doing multiple takes. This really worked here as I recorded while vacationing in historic Virginia:-). A fun spot if you’re into American history … and AM challenges! I’m very interested to hear your riffs and approach to this challenge. Thanks for listening and for your comments. Cheers, Tom
