My submission for this month’s challenge is an original composition by myself – in the style of the late and great, John Martyn, called: Can We Do That Again?
I hope you enjoy it! 😎♥️

This was great Mark! What a great song. You really blew me away with your original composition.
You’re right, I never heard of John Martyn. I just listened to “Solid Air” and it struck me how much it sounded like a song by Traffic. Now I’m going to listen to some more of his songs. Thanks!

Hi Mark!
An interesting background information on John Martyn ! I was not familiar with him. You had a great original composition in the Style of John Martyn!
I liked your slap fingerstyle adopted from him as well…kudos my friend 🎶🙂Don P

That was quite something Mark. The background commentary was very interesting. I knew a bit about JM, seen him a few times on tv, but had never really followed him. Your composition was first class, as was your performance. Thanks for sharing.

Nice composition Mark, played with style and an interesting right hand which gave your piece real momentum. You reminded me very much of the 60’s when John Martyn and that legendary double bass player Danny Thompson graced the jazz and blues circuits. Those were creative and discovery times.

Love always your original compositions, Mark, you’ve a special talent for songwriting! Very nice chord progressions, melodic ideas, and a truly enjoyable performance with soulful vocals (liked especially the Bass parts in the background and your finger picking/slapping technique on acoustic guitar). Not to mention the inspired lyrics: hope your prayers have been answered and your sweetheart eventually decided to get close to you again like in the old times 😉!
John Martyn is not known in Italy, but for sure now I’m going to listen to some of his songs!Guido

Nice one, Mark. Had I known of him, I would have been a fan of John Martyn also. Great talent, and your original song sounds as good as the first time you shared it with us.

Hi Mark, nicely put together, and you’ve introduced us to an artist that most of us don’t know of. A lot of work went into this, and it’s come together nicely. Lot’s of fun listening.

Nope, John Martyn is virtually unknown here in New Zealand, so I am happy to learn about another great guitarist. Your composition and performance were first class, of course. Great stuff, and thanks for educating us about John Martyn!

Nice composition Mark, interesting picking rhythm which gives the song its characteristic, very fitting with the melody. I am familiar with the artist you’re playing in the style of, but I enjoyed your composition. Very nicely put together.

Great submission, Mark. I really enjoyed your heartfelt intro explaining the meaning of John Martyn’s music in your life. I’d not heard of him before, but I like what I’m hearing in the clips you included. That combination of acoustic guitar and stand up bass works so well. Cheers!

Mark,
Nice job, and great that we have the Forum to spread these tunes from people we’ve followed for so many years. Thanks for the intro to John Martyn.

Thank you Mark for the history lesson about John! I knew very little about him. What a great experience for you to see him in a smaller venue. Hey, your strumming it taking off very nicely! Well done!

Great tribute package for your artist style. Had not heard of John Martyn but familiar with Phil Collins music. What a connection and the influence he has had on you. I was so intrigue with your fingerstyle slap (how does he do that!) and then to find out it was JM influenced again. Super submission.

Very well done Mark – this is a good song. I love John Martyn and in many ways he was responsible for my original interest in guitar (along with Dylan) and a singer/songwriter style. I had the Album Solid Air on repeat for most of my early adult life and the song “May you Never’ was the first thing I learned to play (badly). Well done – this is a big achievement.

Super interesting story Mark. I do know John Martyn – the UK guitar tradition includes amazing acoustic players. And man, your composition is rhythmic and beautiful. You’re an innovative player and pen, and perform, great songs.
Cheers, Tom

Thanks, Mark, for reminding me on John Martyn. I listened to him in the seventies quite a bit and also have a few albums of him from that time. But you are really a fan and your song is such a wonderful tribute to him. I enjoyed it and also your interesting words in the beginning very much. You definitely have me inspired to listen to John Martyn again.

I am learning so much today. We have a great community here with so many great music fans with a huge knowledge of music and musicians. And most of us have the same taste. That said, Mark, thank you very much for pointing out John Martyn.
I did not know him before but I just listened to your posts above… really great.
And after hearing John Martyn sing I did get a better insight in the way you play and sing. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽Bluesige Grüße

Thanks for telling your story with John Martyn. I only know the song “man in the station” when I was searching for a song in DADGAD tuning (love the song). I read a bit about his sad life story.
Your composition is wonderful, Mark! It has all components that make a good song: great melody and chord progression, and an unmistakable guitar part. It is a very deep minded song. Bravo!

Sorry for the late ‘Thank You’ to all who commented on my submission – you are so kind and supportive, and your encouragement is so much appreciated! 👍♥️
As I was listening to and commenting on this month’s submissions, I had to break off as an early Xmas present I’d ordered for myself was delivered 😊 I just couldn’t resist opening the box – more on this later 🤔
The song “The Man In The Station”, that Denise mentions, is a beautiful song that I think is rather sad. The lyrics are like the opening scene of a film, and I want to know more and see how it ends!
Gary mentioned the song “May You Never” – this was covered by none other than Eric Clapton on the Slowhand album. I think this cover brought John to the attention of a much wider audience!
Thanks again and best wishes everyone ♥️😎
